Jerking when in 4WD

My '97 SR5 (108k miles) jerks repeatedly when making a sharp turn at low speeds, such as turning into a driveway or a parking spot. It does it both in forward and reverse. It's as thought the wheels are engaged, then not, engaged, then not. When they are not, they don't move, so the vehicle lunges repeatedly as it tries to move. It seem OK when travelling straight and making moderate turns.

My local Toyota dealer's shop is unreliable at finding problems that are not part of "scheduled maintenance". If any one has heard of this problem, or has a concept for what it could be, I would appreciate your advice/input. Thanks

Are you using the 4WD on dry pavement? Tight turns in 4WD are usually difficult.

yes do NOT use it on pavement like that... and do not try tight turns with it. youre causing it to bind.

This was not on dry pavement. It was on wet/slushy pavement during a snow. Perhaps still not conditons warranting 4WD. I purchased this vehicle used in the summer and this was the first time to test the 4WD during inclement weather. Perhaps it's just fine and the the roads/parking lot had more traction than I thought.
