Under the general ramblings catagory:
As I "adjust" from a Pickup to an SUV I'm noticing the "little things".
Today I'm taking my chainsaw+gas can to the lake. It is a requirement, because we have no idea what the trail will look like. How are others transporting materials such as gas/diesel/propane tanks?
I have considered the roof, but it isn't my first choice. Perhaps a roof basket could make me more confident. In the near future I will also need to carry bikes on the roof.
I have looked at hitch "racks" - which could easily be welded up to have higher sides. This would destroy departure angles tho. One of these racks might have been passable, as it "rises up" 4-5" from the hitch.
For now, I will just half-fill the little jerry can, and wrap it in a plastic garbage bag. I've used some bungee cords to secure it. In the future with my large can (for the boat etc) I will have to find some alternate solution.
In a similar line of thinking: I need to carry garbage as well. I don't like leaving anything where I camp or go to the cottage, so I often have a garbage bag that I "bring back". Ideally, I could store this outside the vehicle (in case of leaks etc).
Other nitpicking: That class 3 hitch on the 2003 Runners is a disaster. Nothing seems to line up with the pin. Yes I've searched the threads, I guess I'll either drill my own pin-hole or just order the part from Toyota. Since I do tow fairly often, all the fuel/garbage stuff can just go in the trailer.
