Hello Folks,
My name is Jeff and I have been following this forum for a long time now. Finally, I've gotten my own 4Runner. It's a 1997 SR5 V6 with a 2/4th gen supercharger. I'm actually only 15, so I cant drive it yet. I have been working for about 2 years saving up to buy a vehicle. I purchased it from a guy who didn't put much TLC into it, and I really don't think he washed it once! Notice the :barf: sticker on the back window on the pictures I have from the ad.
The bad:
-313K km on the body, so roughly 194.5K miles.
-2 Small rust spots on tailgate
-3 very small rust blemishes above windshield.
The good:
-New engine and transmission with 150K km.
-No rusty fenders
-Holds a straight line with no hands!

Thanks though, I think white is one of the nicest looking 4R's out there. This forum is really helpful though and I hope to get my rig to be as nice as most of them on here.

Great first purchase and a big electronic pat on the back for earning the money for it. You're going to treat it and respect it so much more because of that.

Thanks! I definitely will be treating it with respect. After all, it is my own hard work that bought it.


On a side note, it tends to smoke a little more than I thought would be regular. It is white smoke that is similar to the cold weather exhaust look, but it does it inside some and stays like it when outside. I will try running some injector cleaner through it this weekend, but I read earlier that it could be a head gasket? Any info is appreciated.

Yeah. It might be. Keep a good eye on your coolant levels.

Ditto on the idea of keeping a close eye on the coolant level... check the oil for any contaminants ie. milky streaks (when you change the oil). Try a compression test, all cylinders should be close...

I'll keep an eye out on the coolant levels, good suggestion. I could do a compression test too, the tool is sitting right in the garage. Also, I don't think my E-Locker is engaging. Where are the terminals that you connect a battery to to see if it will go with a direct connection?

Thanks. I can't disagree, I love a sunfire red 4Runner! I like the "clean" look of a white truck though.

So since I got the insurance inspection done on the truck, it has been acting funny with the lighting system. The P.O had high beam lamps, but pointed down, which is illegal in Alberta. So the shop swapped them with some nice 2 in 1 high/low beam lamps. Problem is, since we have taken it home, it just uses power and eventually the driver side light turns off and it eventually loses its charge and won't start. The mechanic at the shop (who has been really good with us) says that the alternator is good, and last time he swapped batteries for me. Something must be drawing power. All fuses have been checked, nothing blown. Anybody have any experience with this or have any idea on a suggestion?
