Jingle jangle from front end...

1996 SR5 4runner base, new wheel spacers (3/16") and cragar soft 8's with stock 265/70R16
It had no odd sounds, no nothing when I had the new cragar swapped on, but I pulled off the fronts to remove the center caps that the shop put on (paint them black and put it back on later)
I bent my breaker bar trying to remove the lug nuts, I guess they hit them with an impact SUPER hard... Put them back on torqued in the pattern correctly, 150 ft lbs
On the way to school this morning I heard tink tink tink/jingle jingle jingle, not on any rhythm, just random, didn't speed up the faster I went. Got to school and the tailgate hadn't closed the whole way (realized that where I couldn't pull over) closed it, went to class, got out, came back home and here it is again, same noise, coming from the hood/front end. Last time it happened my battery hold down popped out so I didn't fret and checked the battery when home. Nope! Tight.
So now I'm scared the front wheels will pop off... What could it be?

Never heard anything like that from my experience. Scary. You'd better check out the spacers and make sure they're all sound. Also, the torque specs are 83 lb/ft, not 150 (that's way too tight). Make sure you didn't damage any of the lugs.

This is why I don't use spacers. Potential for more problems, which if wheels are involved, could be fatal. I don't even want to mess with that.

Alright I'll back them off. The shop installed them with what I believe to be a 3/4" impact... They were well into the 200's.

my neighbor had a weird random clanking noise like that coming from the passenger rear tire on his dakota, it mainly happened when he was slowing down and speeding up, it turned out to be a tire valve stem inside the tire.... that could be a possibility.... thats my .02....

This is happening to my 02 runner also its coming from the front left drivers side. It sounds almost as a piece of metal is loose but it doesnt rattle all the time its only when i hit a bump or small pot hole. Even the slightest bump will set this off. Now with the windows up you cant hear anything but if you have the windows down no matter what speed your going and you hit a bump or hole you will hear this noise.. its definitly the tire area im just not sure what... I looked under the truck one day and poked around for about an hour checking bolts and screws on the skid plate and other areas but i still cant find where this damn noise is comming from. I even took it to the toyota dealership and told the mechanic about it but he said theres no noise.. There is my dad heard it so did most of my friends im just worried about the long run of it..


Anyone have ideas??? I would greatly appreciate the help.

I called my mechanic whose also my neighbor, he stopped on the way home and looked at it, he kicked the tire a few times and got it to happen. It's coming from the front hub, the dust cap is lose. It does it on both sides on mine, and the roads in Abq NM are rough so it jingles no matter what now. I got my center caps painted and the'll go back on tomorrow. It seems they provide some pressure on the dust cap keeping it in place. You got after market wheels?

How loud is this noise. Loud enough it's sounds like something is ready to fall off, or just a little jingle like a few coins in your pocket? I remember having one customer years ago so sensitive to a certain noise, and I could only reproduce with them in the truck when driving by a building slowly with the window down. It ended up being the cap on the front wheel bearing nut that keeps the nut from backing off with a cotter pin was moving around on the nut. Bending the cotter pin to keep the cap from moving fixed his noise, but it was so slight a noise most people would never notice it. How he heard it through the wheel center cap and the dust cap on the hub I have no idea.

About that, maybe a little worse. You have to have your head out the window or be really listening to hear it. it started when I pulled the center caps and left them off to paint it, so I think maybe the dust cap is jingling lose? I'm putting the center caps back on later today. It sounds very reasonable that the same thing your customer had could be what's happening to me. In my reasoning I think the center caps in the after market wheels hold the center cap on a little tighter. It's safe to drive right?

Everything is stock on the Runner.. And its not the tire im pretty sure. I think it might be the Shock or something around that area like the Spring or such. It only happens when i hit a small bump or hole. The sound isnt getting louder which is good. But it always happens its not like it makes the sound for a few hours then stops its on going ever single bump makes this noise..

So how do I pop those dust caps off on the hubs? How do I do it without mangling the cap?
1 more reason I don't like IFS... I'm a SFA guy...
But, it's not with my head out the window, I always drive with the windows down and the AC off. Just windows up in the AM and by lunch time it's windows down, it's too hot. I don't like using the AC, so going down streets I can hear it.

K, painted and put the center caps back on, jingle is ever so faint now, that I won't worry about it.
