Job relocation... Time to move the family!

Hey Guys,
My company decided to end the lease it has on the building I work in and offered my family and I a relocation package from San Diego, CA to Columbus, Ohio.

While initially not really hot on the idea of leaving my home state of CA, the prospect of keeping my job and getting a bigger home with a cheaper mortgage and lower cost of living can't be ignored. The wife also has family about 3 hours away from Columbus, which makes it easier for her to deal with.

We're currently looking at houses in the south east Columbus area and assuming we can find a house and close by the end of the year, I would imagine that we'll be making the move sometime in January.

So if any of you guys are in central Ohio area, be on the lookout for my '99 4Runner to be invading a trail and fishing hole near you.

Being another person that relocated from SoCal to another state let me voice what I should have done differently. I have done 5 corporate relocations to date.

Ten years ago, I sold my 2 bedroom/2 bath condo in SoCal and bought a 5bed/4bath house on 1/2 acre. By cashing out of SoCal I was able to put down half on my new house. That was a good thing. But ten years later, I would buy a smaller house and purchase outright.

I am sure you will do your homework but when realtors learn you are from California they will try to take advantage of your skewed perception of real estate value.

I just moved to Columbus for my Job. I was able to come spend a couple weeks here first and look around for a place to live. I grew up on the west coast and moved to TX in 1998.

Word to the wise, southeast is not real great an area. just a few nice spots.

Look in places like.

Sout/West-Upper Arlington (awesome schools)
West - Hilliard
northwest - Dublin
south central - Grove City (old but nice in the established part
notheast - Westerville

anyway, if you need me to go check a neighborhood or something for you please feel free to PM me.

My wife and I will both be working in Gahanna which is why we were looking in that direction. The area we were focused on for homes is Pickerington which I hear has some nice neighborhoods and some of the best rated schools. (Violet Elementary scored a perfect 10).

I've been to Columbus about 6-7 times, but my wife has never been there so we're going to look for houses and check out neighborhoods on the 11th of November.

I just got the green light yesterday to move to Seattle from Phoenix. Taking off by years end. So excited. Congrats on the new opportunity! Are you pulling a trailer?

I've been to Columbus about 6-7 times, but my wife has never been there so we're going to look for houses and check out neighborhoods on the 11th of November.

Gahanna is not bad at all. Pickerington is nice, house are a little high, but the schools are worth it IMO.

Thanks man. Actually the company I work for will be moving our stuff for us and shipping 2 of our cars. (My '04 Tacoma and my wife's '09 Camry) I'll most likely be driving the 4Runner out there with my dog. (German Shepherd)

Yeah, gas sure is a lot cheaper out there. Not to mention that I'll be looking for a house with a much shorter commute than I have now since I currently drive 33 miles to work each day.

The wife and I actually sat down and made the Pros vs Cons list for making this move. Both of us are from So Cal and have almost all of our friends and family here. However, businesses are leaving California in a mass-exit and this opprotunity really can't be ignored.

Yes, Pickerington is considered one of the nicer burbs on the east side, but it is a bit pricey, too. Schools do have an excellent reputation, and it seems to be a mecca for girls' high school sports, if that's a concern. As Toy2G mentioned, the nicest areas of Columbus tend to be on the north end, such as Hilliard, Dublin, Powell, Westerville, Upper Arlington, etc.. For wheeling, head to the southeast quarter of the state, for the Appalachian foothills. One cool place is called Ohio Power ReCreation Land, where they reclaimed vast strip-mine lands and made them into a camping and wheeling paradise of sorts. It's near the town of McConnelsville, which is along the banks of the Muskingum River. Best of luck on the move!

Thanks Bob... Believe it or not the girls sports on the east side is appealing to me as I have a 6 yr old daughter and our plan is to lay down roots out there for the next 12 yrs. My wife and I never want to give up the possibility of coming back to San Diego, but we want to remain in an area long enough for our daughter to finish school.

I'm looking forward to the fishing, camping and wheeling that Ohio has to offer. In looking online, it appears that most of the fishing up in Ohio is for different types of bass. Bass are somewhat of a different animal for me as I've grown up and spent the last 30+ years fishing for rainbow and brown trout on power bait and crawlers up in the Sierra Nevada mtns.
