June 2016 Meet and Run

Ouch. Hopefully it is just a water pump.

It is always great to wheel with great leaders and every month we as a group get better and more organized. Getting everyone on one set of coms is a big step. It's also more fun.

Also with around 8 inches of clearance it was nice that there were so many 10 inch rocks all over. Still I got more damage at Calico.

There was a loud squeal and then the temp went way up and the car shut off and wouldn't start.

Sounds like the pump seized up and that was the belt slipping. Now if the engine shut off, that may be another issued caused by it. An overheated engine can take out a head gasket pretty quick, and hopefully it didn't get to the point where the head got warped. If you take it to a shop they should be able to figure that out pretty quickly. If you plan on checking it out yourself, first check the oil for a milky brownish color, then pull one of the spark plugs and see if it's coated/smells like coolant. Either one of those point to head gasket.

You know it was a great trip when this is how you get home.

Doh, we had a jeep blow up an axle and had to get trailer-ed out.

Round of applause to everyone that made this happen and helped where they could. Great teamwork by everyone. It wasn't luck everyone made it though with no body damage, and some parts of the trail looked impossible to get though without damage in a lightly modified 4runner. I saw so many people take initiative to help others out. I would guaranty there is no other regional forum as active, and with the enthusiasm we have here in the SoCal section.

TW and T4R have THE best SoCal sections and are equally full of great people. Sounds like you guys had a blast, and Rowher was insane to say the least. [MENTION=136692]SixthSnail[/MENTION] almost flopped it. I had to jump on his slider and spot him up a nasty section. A 2wd Tacoma almost flopped it too, he had to be winched back.
[MENTION=117408]Oneluv13T4R[/MENTION] A small note for any future T4R run to Rowher though, both Lookout peak from the front, and Rowher Flats trail from the front are not 2wd accessible. There is a fire road that runs from the rear (think it was 2N08) that leads up to lookout and then you can take Rowher back down since it's all downhill. Even our 4wds were struggling with some sections of the front way. My ATRAC was working overtime yesterday.

By the way when Miah says 30-40 mph thru the valley he does not mean 50 plus, we went all wheels off ground and landed just before the bend. My son and I flew out of our seats . Great fun.

I'd like to add my thanks as well, great job Trail Leaders!! And yeah, apparently 45mph is a bit too much for the dog co-pilot, we floated quite a bit and I'm pretty sure she turned a full flip in her seat!

I didn't take that many pics but here they are.

We started off driving through mostly Joshua trees

That transitioned into some pinion pine and got a little rocky.

I didn't take any pics of the 1st good rocky hill climb. In fact next pics I have are right after lunch. Lining up to drive through the Valley. 35mph was great.

After we crossed the 18 the scenery was much better and the weather was cooler.

The last difficult part was going through the squeeze. 5th gens were a tight fit.

Third gens had plenty of room.

I had smelt something funny for during the afternoon. I know my valve covers are leaky so hot oil smell is always present, but this was different. I stopped and checked all under hood fluids and everything seemed fine, then after the squeeze I found this.

Apparently somewhere along the line I blew both rear axle seals. Guess I can't really complain after 223k miles.

Seems like an okay job thanks to another great write up to BFAD.

I went off looking for that coyote that was howling during lunch. Came back and had missed everyone pulling out! My radio battery was dying and I couldn't get ahold of anyone. Headed back down 2N02 to Yucca Valley. It was a pleasure meeting so many of you all!

Thanks again everyone for such a great time especially to the leaders oneluv, crazy and 85straight. This was a great trail to test the limits of my 2wd. Lockers and inc clearance next. We ended up at crab flats camping on a great spot on the side. Kids and my buddt had a great time. Thanks again everyone.
