Junk Yard Rims

So my wife and I might be preparing for a move back to the Midwest, which means snow tires...

My thought is this...I love the Split Spoke 17" Sequoia Rims, and would get some except all of my rigs have new 16" rubber on them...so I think I am going to acquire the 17" rims for snow tires.

I can get 8 of the rims for $60 a piece...I think I can get them down to $55 a piece. I am going to spend at least $30 a rim for steel rims (I assume, I haven't priced them because I don't want them).

Thoughts on junk yard rims?

I have had no problems with junk yard rims. You just have to look them over good. I picked up a set of 5 stars in Corvallis at B&R he wanted 200 for 4, I offered 175 and he took it. That's what my new snows are mounted on now, and I had no issues with balance etc. that was last fall. I needed them to go with my TBU as I have a set of the earlier 6 spoke with snows on them ( wont clear TBU) if your interested. They are at my sons house in Scio. they might be good for one more snow season. I live in the mountains (Clear Lake), 6 foot of snow last year
Ill take 125 for the 4 of them. Shoot me a PM if interested

That's what my new snows are mounted on now, and I had no issues with balance etc. that was last fall. I appreciate the offer, but one of my rigs has the TBU and the other one will before winter. I grabbed two 5 spoke ltd's from Corvallis and mounted my spares of them.

Is it pretty obvious if a rim is going to give you issues? Are bends easy to spot? Obviously major gnar on the faces can indicate worse issues, but I've never seen a bent rim to know if it is easily apparent.

I bought used wheels for my old Honda DD. They looked perfect but one was out of round. Couldnt tell until driving on it.

They came with tires on it. I put it on the PS rear & barely felt it. Felt it more in the other 3 locations.

Car wheels? No, cars bend alloys all day long with potholes. 4Runners have some decent rubber around the rims so you don't really worry about bending a wheel.

I live in an area with all 4 seasons. When I first bought my 4r, I bought 4 split 3's for $150--- they weren't in great shape so I removed the corrosion, re-finished them and painted them. They looked practically new. 3 years later I decided to do the TBU, so I had to replace 2 sets of rims. I found a set of 16" LTD rims from a fellow member--- this worked, as I had a great set of all season tires for the warmer months.

For Winter, I went to a junk yard and found a set of 17" Sequoia rims--- they were in pretty rough shape--- they tried to talk me out of them--- but they took $150. They were another corrosion/refinishing job, but they turned out well.

I found a good set of Winters--- I must admit I like the Sequoia rims the most.

I saw your post in the OEM Wheel Option thread and knew I was on the right path. I love the split spoke. Any idea what the difference between "painted" and "polished" is? Because the image at the yards show up the exact same.

I'm not sure what the official reference means--- just what I've witnessed. My LTD rims are polished--- they are polished alloy with a clearcoat finish. When I got them the CC was starting to chip off and minute spots of corrosion were starting. I stripped the CC and re-polished them and applied 4 coats of CC.
My Sequoia rims, on the other hand, looked like polished alloy but due to the significant corrosion (lifting paint), they were clearly painted. When they were new you would have had a hard time telling. When I re-finished them, I had some sanding to do to remove the pitting till they were smooth again. I coated them with an adhesion agent, primer and 4 coats of rim paint.

If you're planning to go this route, here are the items required: paint stripper and a plastic scrapper, fine wet and dry sandpaper, steel wool, and for the really stubborn hard to reach spots a Dremel! The Dremel worked great!

The adhesion promoter was a zinc chromate primer made by Dupli-color CDAP1691
The paint was called High Performance wheel coating also made by Dupli-color CHWP10200 HIGH PERFORMANCE GRAPHITE

I picked up a few cans of the graphite wheel paint but can't find that exact primer anywhere.

My 5-star rims are actually in good shape. I'll probably scuff them up before primer, or just skip the primer since they're already painted from the factory.

The irony of finding good to be not good enough is endemic of what's wrong with our society and I am the harbinger of this inequity.

Sounds like a plan. If they were already painted, then a light sanding and paint will be better. The primer I used is specifically to improve adhesion to AL alloy. With my caps, I lightly sanded them and painted. Them I took a dollar store fine paint brush and painted the "Toyota" symbol with red. done.
