It depends on the leasing company and how far into the lease you are. It can also depend on if you're trading the leased vehicle in early for another vehicle (not necessarily from the same manufacturer) Depending on if the vehicle is retaining it's value, you may be able to trade up or out of your lease early. The other alternative to get out of it early without a huge penalty is to use a site such a www.swapalease.com that allows folks to transfer their leases to others who are willing to assume them. Unless you can find someone on your own who may be willing to assume your lease. Your leasing company can provide the paperwork and fee amounts to do this yourself.
I was leasing a 2002 GMC Envoy thru GMAC and still had 12 mos left on a 36 month lease. I chose the trade in route to end my lease early because the Envoy's payoff value was within range of getting a dealer to agree to negotiate. The selling dealer agreed to the payoff amount and also provided a fair discount off the selling price as well. Though the price of the 4runner was fair w/ the trade, I'd have gotten a little better deal w/o the trade. We both benefited to some extent. and the payments on the 4runner were within $10 of what I was paying on the Envoy! To me, it was worth the extra $10/mo to drive a vehicle a I wanted, vs. being stuck in one I wasn't happy with for another year. Plus I didn't have to deal w/ all the typical lease end crap and unexpected fees for "wear and tear", even though the Envoy was still in pristine condition.
Call your leasing company and obtain your payoff amount to help you make an educated decision.
