I'll take a rock solid drive train over a bulletproof latch any day. 402,000 on mine so far, including all latches.

exactly what I was thinking...i mean you’d be lucky to make it off the lot before your tailgate latch didn’t work

I am a Pre Manager for a chain of six dealerships.. dealing with 100’s of vehicles per day.. let’s just say — we are blessed with our Toyota’s. The amount of American made products with less then 1000 miles people trade is baffling as they absolutely hate the vehicle. I drive a 1997 4 Runner over a brand new 2018 anything because of all the issues with these newer vehicles.

It takes about 30 minutes and very little heavy lifting to replace any door handle.
It takes 8 hours of very heavy lifting and usually bleeding to replace the trans.
I'd say Toyo has there priorities correct regarding the OP's thought. lol

Never heard of issues with the rear latch on any of those vehicles (but also don't know all that much about the Tundras and Sequoias). Maybe you have a heavy hand? Might need to learn to soften up a bit.

Two 4runners here, 166k & 218K & no hatch latch issues. This isn't even a mention on this forum. I know the Sequoia has an issue because I read about it when researching buying one.
I agree i love my toyotas. 99 4 runner 250k, 07 Tundra 286k. 12 rav 4 100k and formerly a sequoia sold at 120k. I wouldnt trade them for the world. But the sequoia rear hatch was changed twice under warranty, and I did it twice. second time bought an aftermarket metal one. Had the tundra for 2 years and its the second time the tailgate latch has broken.

[emoji23][emoji1362]I know we're all defensive of our precious 3rd gens, but it honestly sounds like a Tundra/Sequoia issue.
'97 had 260k on it when I sold it, and the '01 has 235k- neither have given me one single problem with the hatch latch- nor have a seen anyone mention it in the years I've been here

The latch handle on my tailgate on my 99 literally, or maybe figuratively:second:, rusted away. It wasn’t hard to replace and I fixed other issues with the tailgate when I fixed that. Can you believe that some person thought that tack welding the latch for the tailgate was a good idea?!? They also destroyed the bolts for the latch so I couldn’t even take them out. I had to cut that sucker off. I couldn’t believe it until I saw the butcher job they did. Besides fixing someone else screw up everything else has been fine.

The "bicycle brake cable" in the cable housing seized up near the latch for mine, so when you pulled the handle it would just move freely without disengaging the latch down below. This required me to take the latch off and squirt WD40 type solvent up the housing and work it until it became free again. No problems since.

My other vehicle is a GM truck with 206k miles on it and perfectly functioning door latches.

My 99 hatch is used just about every day. This is my third 3rd gen. I've learned the little quirks to keep them working smoothly. 3 spots of attention is the cable assy, the little white clip that pops off, and the electronic lock assy that has a a plastic corner that breaks off where the screw hole causing a assy misalignment not allowing the switch and even the key or sometimes the key not to work. I zip tie the assy in place to make up for the broken screw hole, works like a charm. I should do a write up cause I know its frustrating.

I've owned 2 3rd Gens - each with over 200k miles.
Rear hatch latch/handles never gave any problems.
