just bought 96 4runner

Hey All - just got a 96 4runner 4wd limited with 150,000 miles. What should I be checking on? I know about checking the axle seals and called Toyo who said only recall was rear coils springs.

Do i need to worry about auto trans? Do these trans go bad? Should I put in a trans cooler? I'll be towing occaisionally, but it's only a light motorcycle trailer (max 1500 lbs w/bikes). I drive to mountains (Tahoe) 2-3 times per month, so it'll get alot of mtn driving.

Any major engine things to look out for? Anyone in Sacramento area have a good shop to recommend for timing belt?

What's up. I, myself just got a 2000 4Runner and I wanted to change out my stock anti-sway bars and shocks. I am also searching for a goos shop since I don't have the space to do it. Please let me know whenever you find one. Thanks.

I don't think you need a trans cooler, but adding one won't hurt. The most important thing with a transmission is to keep the fluid from overheating, and if it does get hot, change the fluid right away. Most people neglect to change the trans fluid, so if you don't know the maintenance history I would do a trans flush, or change the fluid every month for a few months. I was told by the dealer that the trans filter doesn't need to be changed, so just drain the drain plug.

I have 170,000 miles on mine and the only things I have replaced are the ignition key lock cylinder and the shocks.

Like it was said in the above post, I would change out all of the fluids (transmission, x-fer case, engine, etc.). If it was treated well with maintenance being done on-time, the transmission should last for quite a long time. Transmission cooler wouldn't be necessary for you, but couldn't hurt.

BTW, you have a timing BELT, not a chain.
