Just bought a 3rd Gen T4R, got some questions

You could have your rear brakes locking when coming to a stop because of the gear oil leak onto the pads. This would cause you have to rev the engine a little to pop them loose. This could be your issue with the hesitant starts.

You only need to replace the 1 seal on each side to fix the oil leak, not both seal, rings and retainers. Technically you should replace the bearings if oil has been leaking for a while, but that is a much bigger job and I would put it off if you can. One guy here managed to repack his bearings without removing any of the rings. If you are up for the job, you could give that a shot as long as the bearings aren't already damaged. That is what I would do (in fact I plan on doing that soon).

Yeah the mechanic is quoting $1300 to do all of that and I'm not ready to put all the money into it...especially when I'm hearing 2 different causes for the slippage.

@NelsonMD, so you recommend just doing the seal on both sides. and leaving the rings and retainers alone?

It is a pretty common failure. It might be pricy to fix depending on who you go to with the issue.

how could gear oil cause the breaks to stick that bad? if anything i would think it would make them have less resistance.

I would tend to agree but I am not a gura of brakes. When my rear axel seals failed, I drove around for weeks without any sticking.

Yeah, I'm not confident enough to do this job myself, so I'll have to get creative and get a mechanic to help. Does anybody here have stories of getting this issue and having results from doing the rear axle leak seal replaced along with the bearings and brake shoes?

as a followup.

I had the work done on the driver's side rear axle as the leaking was worse on that side. they did a rear axle seal replaced, the bearing replaced and new brake shoes and pads.

It's driving way better and i think that was the issue..the axle was leaking oil and it gunked up ABS.

I'll just add to the seat belt side.

My 5 year old and 2 year old have been splitting time in our 2000 4Runner since birth, from the removable seat/carrier up through the seat belt positioning booster. They've all been installed using the belt, although the tip of pulling the belt out to ratchet makes a great deal of sense. I've been tightening the belt on the convertible (rear or front facing) seat every month or so due to gradual and slight loosening.
