Hello all. I just bought a high mileage 97 limited. I have always loved 4Runners and finally got one. I couldn't pass this one up because I got such a good deal on it, but it has high mileage(149,000 miles), several scratches on the fender flares, a few dents in the bumper(front & rear) and it needs a bearing replaced in the rear differential on the main pinion. I'm returning to college, so this vehicle hopefully will get me through school, again. I hope the Toyota quality I've always heard about is true..hehe.
My stepdad has a friend that owns a body repair shop, so I'm gonna see if he can cut me a deal repaint the fender flares and running board, repaint the square section on the back where the rear wiper sits a top of, re-gold plate the toyota symbols, replace the front bumper/valence, and rear bumper. These cosmetic changes ought to bring the value up depending on how much I can do myself and how much I have to pay to have done. I'll definitely have to pay to have the painting done. I could still sell it right now and probably make $2,000-$2,500 as it is.
I'm a very particular person and take pride in my vehicles, so to see any scratches at all is upsetting. There isn't a dent one on the whole truck except on the bumpers which are cheap to replace, thank God.
The inside is ok, but also has some cosmetic issues. The driver seat has a crack in it, on the side. There's several scratches on the glove box and all kinds of scratches in the back area where the previous owner hauled stuff. The carpets are also stained, but oh well. If I had owned this truck since day one it would still look show room condition, but some people don't value how a vehicle looks and want to USE it. I dare say this truck I just bought was a work truck and although it looks abused a little, I still love it and will give it a good home.
I also just bought a repair manual and plan to change the tranny and rear diff fluids and would probably love to do the timing belt and water pump, but I'd need VERY detailed directins for me to attempt such a tedious task. If anyone has any advice on or has another website with toyota 4runner specific repairs and maintenance stuff then I'd love to hear about it or see it...thanks.
Also, both fog lights were busted out, so I took the factory lights out because it looked like an eye sore all busted up and non-working. Does anyone know of a good aftermarket set of fog lights I could install, or some that would bolt right up where the factory fog lights went? Or, I might be willing to buy a set of factory fog lights for a 97 4runner if someone has any or knows of someone that has some. I'm sure the cost of new factory fog lights from the dealership would be ridiculous like everything else is from a dealership, if I bought them new..haha.
