just bought a 99' runner, now what?

new to the 4runner world. just bought a new to me 99 with only 116k miles,
5spd with 3.4 V6. what mods can/should I do to improve performance and gas mileage. also, what should I stay away from as well

Nice catch on both the 5speed and mileage. I would say go camping or exploring. If u make it down here to sunny az I will go on the broken arrow trail with u. Don't worry, my rig made it stock without a scrach!
 
Stay away from the stock brakes. Upgrade to the Tundra Brakes if thats in your budget. Great way to start off a new 4Runner and a good way to start working on it.
 
5W30 synthetic oil and filter change to maximize engine life and fuel economy

Make sure you have a decent stereo to enjoy your highway driving and commuting

Fix anything that is not working - always something when you buy a used car.

Do synthetics really improve fuel economy and engine life? Always used regular engine oil, never had a problem. Only thing different about synthetics i know about is that you change the oil every 5-7k instead of 3k (with regular).

Who knows. People will quote a bunch of testimonials and test results showing synthetic is far superior, increases mpg by millions of miles, etc. I'm of the belief that if the oil is up to the manufacturer's standards, it's good to go. Personally I go with synthetic because I just buy up Mobil 1's 6 qt boxes from Costco for $24 whenever they're on sale. Plus the longer intervals you mentioned.

Watch, I'm about to get flogged by some synthetic die hards. :nono:
 
i'll be using it as a daily driver/hunting rig so I wont be doing any hardcore wheeling and rock crawling....are there any websites the cater to the 4runner crowd. what about a throttle body spacer? MAF sensor? exhause?...just curious about little things I can do to boost performance and driveability

Hey, welcome from Eugene! This forum is a great resource for any information and the site sponsors cater quite well to the 4runner crowd. As far as a throttle body spacer goes, ive never heard of any improvement in modern cars, I think their mainly just a $60 piece of under hood bling. Maintanence is the biggest improvement on our trucks as far as mileage goes. Other than that there's not a whole lot.

Yes, consistent oil changes with synthetic oil and a quality filter will:

  1. Prolong your engine life
  2. Extend your oil change intervals by two
  3. Reduce internal parts friction
  4. Smoother running engine
  5. Coat and impregnant your metals for better protection
  6. And get you at least 1 mpg more a gallon

I'm a former Mobil Oil marketing rep from many years ago and literally when to petroleum college (6-week corp training) for all petroleum products including refinery visits.

I also have a dropped and tuned sleeper 95 VW Jetta with 281K on the odo due to running synthetics.

Regular dino oil changes will get you similar results but you won't reduce friction to the level synthetics can.

I personally like Napa synthetics as they are really Valvoline synthetics and Napa Gold oil filters, Bosch oil filters or Wix oil filters.

Others may disagree but if you gauge your mileage after switching to synthetic, you'll see.

I'm heading over that way in a week. I ran Broken Arrow with my Wrangler on 33's. I'm surprised you made it with a stock 4Runner. Good driving!
