Just bought a used 2007 4Runner (a few questions)...

Hey all,

Well, we just purchased a used 2007 4Runner and am really happy with the car! It's a V6 4x4 with around 67,000 miles. It wasn't a steal of a price, but I think we got a pretty good deal.

Anyway, I had a question about the 4 wheel drive. We had a Toyota dealer service department check it out before we purchased it and when I drove it, I put it in 4 wheel drive as well and everything seemed fine. I just noticed today (bought it on Saturday) that when in 4 wheel drive mode, after stopping, there seems to be a light "clunk" (best way I can describe it) that doesn't occur when in 2 wheel drive. It will either happen as soon as the it is fully stopped, or if not then, may happen as soon as I take my foot off of the break and step on the gas again. It's not major, but it is noticeable. It happens almost every time (there have been a few times where it hasn't happened, but does most of the time).

Is this something to be concerned about? I assume this isn't normal, but wanted to check before spending time having it checked out.

completely normal

Congrats on your 4TR!!! Mine does the same thing. This is normal on 4Runners. No need to worry. Can't really explain what is technically going on when it does this, though.

edit: my previous "4Runners, 3rd gen" did this too.

Thanks! I think we're really going to like this car. Glad to hear mine isn't the only one that does this. Appreciate the quick response!

No problem!! :thumb3: Mine is a 2005 Limited. Got it this year after I traded in my 97 Grand Cherokee (NEVER AGAIN!!) Anyway, lots of stuff I didn't understand when I got it, which is why I'm a member of this forum. Tons of info and good people. I'm sure you'll love your runner! Good luck!
 
My 3rd gen did it and so does my 4th gen. I understand it to be energy that's "stored" upon braking/stopping and is released when you come off the brakes. I beleive it's stored in the suspension but I could be wrong.

It can be a bit unnerving. I first thought that someone had rear-ended me.

Maybe this is "driveline clunk" your are speaking about? You have 2 driveshafts Front and Rear, maybe the front driveshaft and maybe even the rear need some lubrication? Each driveshaft has several zerk fittings for a grease gun, it can't hurt to try to see if this helps. It is something that should be accomplished either way.

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like this is part of the maintenance schedule. I'll be sure to get this done...
