Just changed to Mobil 1

I switched to mobil 1 at 1k miles. The 'break-in' oil just has some added lubricant, which probably doesn't even have the lubricity and heat resistance of Mobil 1. My 4Runner has 75k right now, and my engine is literally as quiet and runs as good as when it had 1,000 miles on it. I run the Mobil 1 extended performance oil, and change it every 4-5k miles.

Why change it every 4 - 5k? You can run for 15k. If your gonna change it that often I think it would be better price pwise to go to the normal Mobil 1 synthetic.

Huh, if you go 15k miles and have a problem with the engine, who are you going to call "Ghost Busters"? By going past the recommended oil change, Toyota may say there not responsible. I doubt Mobil will cover your repairs.

AFAIK, he has no warranty because he is at 75k currently, so why would you go to Toyota? As with most synthetics, you got past "Toyota's recommended interval" If you're in warranty, then I understand, but if your not, then there is no reason to buy EP synthetic if your just going to change it every 4-5k.

I've actually started thinking about just running the standard Mobil 1 again, but I haven't decided. Walmart just lowered the price on Mobil 1 in the 5 quart jug (from $22.94 to $19.96 here in Oklahoma). The extended performance Mobil 1 is $26.XX for the 5 quart jug. So do you guys just tell the service guys just to change your filter? I wonder how much more thermal breakdown protection or how much better lubricity the 'extended performance' really offers. My oil is definitely dirty at 5k...

That is good to know about Walmart as I am out and my 5,000 miles is coming up. As far as thermal breakdown, I would think it is about the same for both oils. My guess is they put more additives in the 15,000 mile to go a longer distance. Maybe someone else can chime in here.

Wow, zowee, I just got back from Walmart here in GA and the 5 quart contianer was $19.9?, probably 19.96. That is less than $4 a quart. At Costco it was around $29 something for 6 quarts. I was so impressed, I bought two containers. Thanks for the tip.

Mobil 1 uses some group III base stock, not POA. Even with using group III base stock Mobil 1 still produces excellent UOAs and ranks right up with the top 100% synthetics.

Koz is correct, Mobil 1 doesn't use POA (what ever that is?).

Mobil 1 uses PAO (PolyAlphaOlefin) as base stock. Mobil 1 is not made from group III base stock (unlike Amsoil XL). But Amsoil sellers/users would like you to think the rumor is fact. (The one rumored "test" only concerned Mobil 1 EP, NOT regular Mobil 1).

Amsoil may be in the same non-committal camp as M1 on describing what base stock comprises their synthetics. Amsoil says the XL is "based" on grp III and that the others are "based" on PAO, but then they go on to say they'll do propietary combinations to get the best oil performance for the application. It seems like they're admitting the combination of group III and group IV when they describe these base stocks as being similar to additives, and then state that just as additives are combined for best performance, so are their base stocks.
Read for yourself...

No synthetic uses 100% PAO base stock.
