Just checked the service records on my 4runner...

I'm not sure why I didn't check this when I purchased my 4runner originally, but I'm sure it's not a big deal.

Does anybody have a reasonable explanation for there being practically NO service records from before I bought it?

Here is a screen shot of what it shows me on the Toyota website:

NOTE: I bought the truck at 28,477 Miles.

I can think of a couple possibilities. Maybe only dealers report maintenance to Toyota and the previous owner had the truck serviced someplace other than a dealer. Maybe this person did the maintenance themselves.
 
Checking service records

TIP: If you have are looking at a used T4R, get the VIN and bring it to the dealer service dept and tell the situation (e.g., you're thinking about buying it, you'd like to know the service history, etc.). My dealer had no issue with pulling up the information for me. It will show stuff that won't show on carfax or autocheck (like a if the vehicle has been taken back to dealer for a recurring problem). Saved me from buying a problem vehicle (recurring electrical issues).

If you register on the owner site, you can also add entries to track owner-performed maintenance.
 
Getting 4R serviced from small mom n pop shop will get it serviced but they are not required to report it. So no history may or may not be a bad thing. Just have it checked.
 
I'm sure it's not a big deal, the truck runs fine, it's just weird if you ask me. It took someone 4 years to drive it 28,000 miles, I just hope to god that they at least did a few oil changes on it :x

Also owner reported information is not viewable except by the person who input the information.

Seems like they should have an option where you can opt to include previous owner reported information. For example in my case; if I ever sell the car, the next owner would probably find it helpful and accurate. The next owner could choose to allow my entries to carry over to his/her account.
 
My concern with my 07 Certified T4R with 43,000 miles is that the records clearly show all the scheduled 5,000 mi oil changes but not the 35,000 scheduled spark plug change. We all know with today’s technology it should/will go longer. BUT! The scheduled warranty related change is 35,000 by the books. The 4R runs good and the tech d/n see a need to replace them and I agree except for the printed fact that they should be.

Warranty requirements, inspections and replacements by Certified Toyota Techs, I feel can be a problem down the road. I’ll expect to get the plugs changed vs purchasing the Certified 4R with a 130.00 instant need to keep the service records straight. This info is showing in the service booklet, Car-fax and Dealer Database (that was e-mailed to me). Please excuse me if I crossed the line in your post. jow
