So, if it happens more in Asians (as a general rule apparently), then what do you think is the cause?? Is it because we're good at math?? Well, if we are good in math, then surely, we won't be buying unreliable German products!

Go to your local Asian market...are you telling me that you see more Bimmers than Toyota Camrys and Honda Accords?? I highly doubt it. Asians are economical people (in general)...and we like reliable things that last forever. Unreliable German products do not fit this mindset.

I have to agree with you. I'm not racist, but I do have to agree with the OP in that it happens a lot with Asians. I do agree that it is race independent though. There are a lot of people of any race that have that attitude.

But I have noticed that Asians tend to think that Mercedes is the best thing to hit cars, and that anything else, even though it may be more expensive or a better car, is inferior. Granted, everyone is valued to have their own opinion, but I would rather have a $30k Honda or Toyota that is going to be more reliable than a $27k C230.

Last time i went to the Asian supermarket, which happened to be today, I'd have to say that I did see a lot of Toyotas and Hondas, but did see a lot of Mercedes too. I think about 1/3 to 1/2 the parking lot was a German made vehicle.

What I hate the most, is that other Asians think they are better than me because of the car they drive. Sure, I may drive a Honda, but I treat everyone equally. I don't think I am superior to anyone because they don't drive the same car I do. It's that attitude that bugs me the most. It's like when the older Asian crowd looks down on the younger generation because they assume that the younger generation can't speak the language. Oh yeah, when you're talking about me, I can understand you. I don't respond back to them though, it isn't worth the time most of the time. Though, one of these days, I may just respond and say something like, "I understood that".

So, imo, it seems like people have the "I'm superior" attitude that comes along with having a status symbol. Like I said before, I do want a BMW, but not for the wrong reasons. I want one because I like the way it drives, not because it's the popular thing to have.

I guess I see that (the older generation Asians being grown up on Mercedes). I just happened to see that today. It's not a typical thing though, don't get me wrong. A lot of the time, I do see Honda, Toyota, Acura, and Lexus.

I'd have to agree though. I've gone to Catholic school for most of my life, of which, most were predominantly white. I don't see a lot of difference between races either. But having moved back to a location that has more Asians, I seem to notice that more Asians today seem to act this way than it was just 5 years ago.

But I do see it happening with people in general, not just Asians, and not held to a particular race.

true, but i am just curious why people (maybe mostly those younger) nowadays seem falling toward that type of attitude? is it because they can make money easier due to the economy? or they never had chance to realize how hard is to make the REAL living? or just simply because the used car value drop so tremendously so they can afford it with the price of a brand new japanese car? i am not trying to make some argument here but seems like this decade, a lot of owners who driving bimmer/MB tend to show people that they have money and don't give much respect to others. seriously, i don't see this type of attitude who drives Jaguar/Volvo/Saab/Porsche or even Aston Martin. i had a customer came in to my store one time who was driving a DB9, he is extremely nice tho.

I honestly don't know. There is the possibility that the younger crowd doesn't really know the true value of a dollar. A lot of the young generation was raised around technology. They are also spoiled. I admit, I'm spoiled myself. I don't know what I would do without a computer, without a cell phone, without a car. I understand that they are things that I take for granted a lot of the time.

And to be honest, I think its getting worse with today's teens. No offense to any teens on the forums, I'm not much older. But, I am learning the value of a dollar, and sometimes, I learn more about it each day. I'm coming to an understanding about how expensive things are, especially those things that I take for granted on a daily basis.

There is a spoiled brat in every generation...it all comes down to how your were raised as a kid. It's a natural feeling for the older generation to "look down" upon the younger generation as being spoiled or unresourceful. I think the point might be missed. There's no doubt that Toyotas and Hondas are dime a dozen in any parking lot. However, there's a good number of affluent Asians that believe MB and BMW is the ultimate status symbol.

I'm Asian and if I'm at the level to afford a luxury car in six figure terroritory, guess what, I'm still going to rock a Lexus. I'll be in a LS600h L, but for now the next car will be a GS350. That's just me. Different strokes for different folks. :

We're all individuals here, and all materialistic to some degree. I'm travelling to Shanghai, China for work soon and look forward to seeing urban Chinese culture, and some rural culture if I can get away and look at it. My guess is that folks there who aren't rich will be driving cars made by Chinese manufacturers or maybe some smaller GM or Toyota models. I wonder what the rich folks in China drive around?
In any case, I'm real exited. I'll be carrying a camera and will snap pics of any and all Hilux's I see. Don't expect anything for a bit, though as I'm not going for awhile.

When I was last there, the air in Shanghai was much better than Beijing.

TheBlueWave, if you get a chance, also go to Beijing. It's really interesting to see how different Shanghai and Beijing are. Plus, it's near the Great Wall and has the Forbidden City (although minus the Starbucks now), etc.

in all honesty, its not an asian thing it is a sociality thing. I know plenty of white women, mexican women that are the same way. The ulitimate issue here is that you buddy married the wrong type of woman. That is unless he gets oral every day.
