Hi folks!

I'm new here. I've been reading up on the 4Runner for a while now from various sources. Well, last nite I took the plunge and got a black '04 LTD V8. The options on this one are: NV, SR, NH, GY, RF, RL, and Z1. Pretty much loaded.

MSRP is $42,656. Their initial asking price is $42,056. After haggling a while, I got it for $38,056 + TDA advertising ($325) + tax/tittle. Tried to haggle on the TDA, but they wouldn't budge. This is in the Chicago-land area, btw. Not sure if I can post the dealership name here or not, so PM me if you want to know.

I did ok didn't I on the price since this is an '04?

Anyways, thought I'd say hello to the group. I'll try to help out when I can. :)

Now, I gotta ask you guys... How in the heck do I convince the wife to let me drive it instead of her? :D

That's a good price for an '04. Anyway, it's too late to feel buyer's remorse!:D

Congrats on your new 'Runner! Remember to post some pics! BTW, is it 4wd or 2wd?? I would assume it's 4wd because most 4runners are 4x4 in Chicago.

Welcome to the forum. Do you have the 04 yet, or is it on order? By the way, it should be alright to mention the Dealers name. Unlike some forums, such as Edmunds, you can post the Dealers name and even links to other 4Runner sites. We even have a Dealer section where you can talk in detail about a Dealer good or bad.

Enjoy your 4Runner.:rotflmao:

Hey guys - Thanks for the welcome.

The dealer I bought it from is Schaumburg Toyota in Schaumburg, IL. My wife drove it home last nite after the deal was done. This is the only '04 they had on their lot. They said they just got it in last Thu. When we test drove it yesterday, it had 3 miles on the odometer. And it is 4WD since it's a V8.

I'll snap some pictures in the next couple of days and post it. Man, that black is going to be hard to keep clean and shiny. But damn, it looks good when it is clean!

Your options

Hi theman1971

Congrats on your new black beauty. I have a black 03 4Runner and you're right, when it is clean it looks great.

I noticed you have these options I recognized like: nav. system, xreas, sunroof, rear spoiler, daytime running lights, curtain and side airbags.

I don't recognize what Z1 is?

How do you like the new camera on the Nav. system? I love my nav system, but I wish it had a camera.

And, I take it you did not get a 3rd row seat (since you have the nav. system). Is that true?

BTW, I keep my wife from driving my 4runner by getting her a nicer car! 8-)

Thanks,
Gene

Hiya 4x4,

The Z1 option is the Preferred Accessory Package. It includes the 4 floor carpets, 1 cargo mat, 2 cargo nets, and first aid kit. Overpriced if you ask me. $265 MSRP and $165 invoice!

The rear-looking camera is pretty cool from what I've seen briefly. My wife thinks that's the coolest feature! :) I'll have to go check it out and report back.

And you're right. No 3rd row seat for me since I have the Nav and the X-Reas.

Time to go for a drive!

theman1971,

first congrats on the purchase! i am considering to buy the 4Runner. i test-drove the '03 V8 Limited loaded with all but Navi.

two concerns:
-- the exhaust on the V8 smells really bad - like rotten eggs. i've seen this reported in other threads - have you noticed anything like that with your '04 model?

-- the roof rack was rattling like crazy in some moderate wind during highway driving.... have you noticed this?

Aside from these two concerns, I just loved this SUV. It might be just the one I've been looking for.

Thanks!

On the rotten egg smell. My wife recently filled up with some gas from Thorton. I drove it yesterday with the AC on. I smelled the rotten egg smell. It's not as strong as something like a skunk, but it's noticable. I opened my window for a minute or two and the smell went away. I'll have to tell her to not use Thorton.

I have not notice the roof rack rattling since I haven't had a chance to take it out onto the highway when it's windy yet. The wife drives it 99.9% of the time. I'll ask her, but sometimes she doesn't hear/notice stuff that I notice.

It's a great SUV for sure!

deniss,

The roof rack on my newly purchased 2003 V8 was loose. Didn't realize it until I did a long freeway drive (when compared to my 2 offramp test drive) and heard inconsistent loud popping and cracking noises. Sounded as if something was breaking. Took in to service dept. Repair tech took it for a drive and determined that the rack was loose. Have not heard any of these sounds since they tightened the rack.

No sulfur smell at all so far. Have driven with front window opened and windows closed with AC running.

very cool. thanks for both replies. i figured the roof rack issue was a trivial problem. the sulfur-rich exhaust vapors probably do depend in part on where you get gas, but maybe it also has to do with the engine being broken in, while any coatings on the materials are being cooked at high temps - just a guess though. im not that concerned about the smell. lexus rx330 owners reported that the new V6 engines sometimes smell like this also. the V8, as far as i've heard, was developed by lexus, right?

You will definitely smell it if you open the rear sliding window down. Try that and you'll experience some first hand "high"! hehe

If you don't, just be happy that you're one of the lucky ones that don't get it!!!!

I'll try it with the rear window down, although I thought that this was not necessarily a problem in California.

You're right...sulfur smell usually does not happen in California. California gasolines do not contain much sulfur.

I'm in Cali and I'll say that I can still smell it when the rear window is down. It's like having a odd high off the 4runner! hehe.

But I rarely drive w/ the rear window down unless I have stuff that's sticking out.

Reclining 2nd row seat

For those of you with a 2004. If you will look at the 2nd row rear seat on your 2004 LTD 4runners and tell me if the seat back reclines aft. The 2003 doesn't but in the 2004 brochure the interior picture with the 3rd row seat, that one has a lever which is just like the Lexus gx470 and it reclines aft. I don't know if this new recline feature applies only to the 3rd row seat optioned vehicles or is it applicable to all 2004 4Runners. Thanks
