Just got my 04 Sport V8

Hey everybody,

I've been a member actually for a while now but I just bought my 4Runner yesterday and I'm loving it. I've always like them since I was able to take my mom's 3rd gen out and have gone back to them now that I'm out of college with the money to do it.

Couple questions though...

1) What oil do you guys use for the V8? I've been into bikes and am a big full synthetic person for that but I haven't much been into cars since my last few have been 4 bangers.

2) Its got 40k on the clock, what maintenance should I be lookin to do soon other than oil?

3) Any good cheap mods that will help performance, looks, etc. but still keep it nice and clean looking?

Congrats on the purchase!

Depending on temps it's seems 5W-30 is the best all around weight for these. I prefer to change my oil and filter fairly regularly so I'm running regular Mobil in it. If you want to go 5k or more between changes go with your favorite flavor of synthetic. I run Amsoil in my bike and change it once a season.

From my searches...it seems like True Flow air filters are the way to go for a little better breathing as they still maintain good filtration. I think Gibson catbacks are the way to go for aftermarket exhaust without the drone or the "hey look at me I have loud exhaust" sound.

Mods for looks....skys the limit. I want to ditch these running boards and get some step bars like the 08s come with but not sure if I'm ok with the price.

Yeah I'm an Amsoil fan too for my R6...I just picked up that in August and am about ready to do an oil change on that thing when its finally time to put it up for the winter...I think i'm tryin to leave the Runner stock for the most part except for the usual visual stuff with tinting, HIDs, and debadging. It looks like 5w30 is the way to go for my kinda climate around DC and I'll just go full synthetic since thats what I'm doin for the bike too.

Thanks for the info, what kind of Ducati do you have? Never ridden a Duc yet but hope to one of these days.

Congrats. I second the 5W-30 oil. Did you get an owner's manual and maintenance manual? The big service you'll hit soon is 45K miles. I just had that one done on my 04 SE V6 at the stealership yesterday... they tackled diff oil, transfer case oil, propeller shaft bolts etc. etc.

I've got a 900 Monster, full exhaust and tuned.

R6 is a good bike too.

Like you, I'm trying to keep the truck mods to a minimum....my wife's pretty understanding, but between my bike and my Mustang I have a history of going a little overboard on the mods.

I've used/am still using Mobil1 in my 4Runners (see my sig), Amsoil in my Stang and have always changed my oil and filter at 8,000 - 10,000 miles including my other vehicles in which I used a good full synthetic . Those that I sold to friends with over 200,000 miles are still running well beyond 300,000 miles with no internal maintenance and no oil useage. Stick with the recommended weight stated in the Owners Manual. The change frequency is up to you. I'm comfortable with 10,000 miles since I used to do oil analysis in the power generation industry and have my own comfort zone.

You should be able to go to the Toyota website and download the maintenance guide but without knowing how well the car was cared for by the previous owner, I'd consider not much more than oil/filter change and a radiator drain and flush. Unless it was used for towing, 40k miles is too early for tranny, differential and rear axle fluid IMO.

As far as mods, I'm sort of in the same boat having bought my '08 about 3-4 weeks ago. I'm already upgrading the lighting and am researching cold air intakes and the Borla dual exhaust.

Thanks for all the info guys I appreciate the feedback...I was surprised to hear I need to worry about the differential fluid and everything already but I'll probably get everything taken care of anyway just to know that it has been changed out during my ownership. I'm sure I'll be stopping by a lot and thanks again for the hospitality.

P.S. Ducman...The R6 is the first bike for me so thats my pride and joy for mods right now but i hope in the next few years to pick up either a Daytona 675 or maybe an 848 for the street and just turn the yamaha into a track bike or something. I'm a big fan of the V-twin's or triples for the street now that I'm a little more of a seasoned rider.
