Just got my '05 SE...but it vibrates.

Hey guys, I just picked up my new '05 4Runner on Friday and of course, love it. My only problem so far is that it seems to vibrate quite a bit...much more so than my Grand Cherokee. I thought the tires were probably out of balance, so I had the dealer rebalance them, but no luck. I have about 150 miles on it now, and it tends to vibrate a lot on the hwy. I have the stock dunlops on them and I know you guys said they suck, but I hope not this much. What should my next plan of action be? Could I have defective tires or should I just drive it a little and see if they balance out.
Oh, it's a 4wd V8 sport edition.

does the vibrations go away at a certain speed?
does the steering vibrate?

check tires again.
check driveshafts - maybe they're not balanced - could happen.

outside of that... i have no clue.
 
Could very well be defective tires. My '04 SR5 also vibrated at highway speeds and the dealership tried 3 separate times to balance them and could never get it right. In the end, they blamed it on defective tires, and said it was quite common on the 4Runners. Luckily, my Dunlops are doing okay so far.
 
No, the vibrations don't go away at certain speeds...although I guess they aren't quite as noticeable at slower speeds.
And yes, the steering wheel does vibrate.
I guess I'll have them try and balance them again.

i'd say worst case, have them change tires and wheels completely. just to take it out of the equation.

otherwise, look at driveshaft and other drivetrain parts. suspension could be a factor but i doubt it.

Tires could possibly be out-of-round, go back to the dealer and tell them they need to FIX IT!
 
Is your symptom a "buzzing vibration" in the steering wheel, or do you have a wobble in the wheel?
 
No, it's not a buzzing. I guess you could say it's a wobble; it feels like the tires are not balanced, but I just had them balanced on Saturday, so I guess I'll have them re-do it.
I'd love for the dealer to change to Revo's, but I seriously doubt they'd go for that. :)
 
Just a thought, when I first got my 4Runner, it seemed very sensitive to vibration through the steering wheel on the highway. Not harsh, just annoying. I checked the tire pressure (OEM Dunlops), and the dealer had them all pumped to 45 psi (32 is recommended on these I believe). I dropped it down some, and that seems to have done the trick. No more vibration.
 
Also, when balancing, make sure you know the difference between wheel & hub centric(?). Some shops/dealers don't have the correct balancing tool. If that's the case, you'll never get it right. Why does it seem like the US 4runners all get Dunlops and not Bridgestones? Don't the JDM ones get Bridgestones?
 
It should ride silky smooth at all speeds. You need to return the vehicle and tell them to call you when it's fixed. They will pull your chain until you put your foot down (or in their ass).

Yeah, I agree that it should be smooth at all speeds. The salesperson (who for the most part was great, but still green) says the vibration is because of the XREAS, but I think that's crap. I don't see how that would have anything to do with it.
I'm going to bring it in next monday and have them look at it again. Oh, I've noticed that it also pulls a little to the left...am I just being picky or should I have them look at that too?
( I already know the answer to that one; I'm just seeing what you guys think)
 
Pulling in either direction is definitely a problem (most likely alignment), and should get checked out (assuming you weren't driving on an enbankment or something :D ).

That might be your vibration problem as well. Like Koz said, don't let the dealer yank your chain. Many of have Xreas and don't have this vibration problem. Keep going up the food chain until it's right. Once they know you aren't going away, they will fix it just to get rid of you.
 
Yeah I did, but I didn't put too many highway miles on it. At the time, it wasn't very noticeable and it's not too bad at slower speeds. It wasn't until I started driving on the highway that I noticed the vibration. One thing I have noticed is that the vibration tends to get better after a few minutes of driving...doesn't completly go away, but gets better.
I don't know why I didn't notice it on the test drive. I guess I drove so many others that I just assumed it would be fine.
 
I have a vibration upon deceleration at 62-75MPH....there is a TSB that was recently released to deal with this issue. I do not have the TSB number, but I read the fix and it is being done today. My understanding is that it applies to those with Dunlop's and the tires getting flat spots...also, it deals with a spring in the steering mechanism that is replaced so you don't get as much vibration feedback in the steering wheel. I will post a follow up once I get it back....hope that helps

Bahaha - those guys will come up with ANYTHING to get you to leave them alone after the sale. Don't let them get away with this one!
 
I notice vibration on my 2004 Sport while driving certain highways, especially the ones which were recently paved.

That would REALLY piss me off if they said that to me. What an f'n idiot. I hate when they just say shit like that without knowing shit about what they are talking about. :FOS: They should just shut their mouths and at least go and figure out a qualified or knowlegable answer.

Why is it that I know 10 times more about a vehicle than any sales person I've ever met?!?! :bash: :cannon: :smash: :twak: :chair:
