Just got my Cat stolen

This sucks!!! My gf and I are go to the gym (24 Hour Fitness) after doing some shopping at Costco. We go to a gym that she used to frequently visit when she was in school and is in the area next to the Costco we are at. Originally, I didn't feel like going to the gym, because it was raining and traffic was pretty bad, but I told myself to just suck it up, it will make me feel better later. Anyways, we get to the gym, and am on the treadmill for an hour and we are ready to leave. I get out to my car, EVERYTHING LOOKS NORMAL. I get into the car, turn the keys in the ignition and VRRRRRRROOOM. I sound like an unmuffled harley. I am just like WTF! So i kill the engine and get my flashlight out because I have an idea what's going on, and low and behold someone took a sawzall to the pipe leading to the catalytic converter taking it, but they did have the courtesy to unbolt the other end, instead of sawing it all off. ( I probably would have been dragging my muffler if that was the case) Anyways, I drive home sounding like a Harley and am pretty embarrassed by the situation because everyone was looking at me weird.

Cliff Notes: went to different gym than usual, got catalytic converter stolen. Epic failure.

Man, that sucks bro. I got mine jacked a couple of months ago and for that reason I moved to another part of town. I pay more now but my rig is much safer. I reported mine to insurance and I paid the $500 deductible so you might wanna go that route. These cats are a hot commodity everywhere, especially in California.
 
I just had my wife's replaced since stolen. $2300! I had a $500 deductible, but I did get pretty much a new exhaust on an 11 year old 4runner.

Yup...It's pretty much what mine cost. The total came out to $1700 but first quoted by the dealer at $ 2100. I paid the $500 deductible and got it replaced. Yea, it sucks.

Reminds me of a time when I was in undergrad at Santa Barbara. My friend had a (very) lowered Accord and we went to LA for the day. Going up a parking ramp that was too narrow to take at an angle, he ripped the exhaust right off. We had to drive from LA to SB (2 hours) without any muffler, (well, it was actually in the back seat) and as a result, I was half deaf by time we arrived home. Luckily he had limo tinting all the way around because we got some strange and angry looks that day.

My dad once drove from Colorado to New York in an MG without a muffler
 
Gee, I keep getting the Cat Efficiency CEL Code (California dual cats). Anybody want to steal them for me??? $500 deductible doesn't sound too bad....

When i read the title to this thread i read it as though it were a mod, like...

The rear catalytic converter was stolen on my 02 tacoma prerunner 3.4L v6 at a school parking lot.

The catalytic converter alone was about 820 to 1000 dollars depending on several different toyota dealers. I had to special order a bracket(35 dollars with a 15% coupon) that holds the cat. converter and two gaskets(9 dollars each with a 15% coupon) from toyota, and I had to buy two rubber hangers from a local part store. According to my insurance company's booklet, the specific catalytic converter was rated at about 800 dollars. The inspector who wrote me a check estimated about 12 minutes (0.2 hour) to finish the whole installation job, which I thought was kind of ridiculous. He actually told me that if I take my car to toyota dealer, dealer people would tell me the job would take about one hour. I still don't know why he quoted only 12 minutes even though he knew it would take longer. And of course, this insurance inspector knew that it would cost more than 800 dollars for a cat converter. The labor cost quoted by my local toyota dealer was 200 dollars. He sort of implied that I should not take my car to the dealer. Well, I told him that 50 state calfornia emission catalytic converter would only be available from toyota. All the parts stores that I checked only had 49 state approved cat. converters at around 250 dollars. Basically, he told me that I'm responsible for 1/3 of the cost because cat. converter is part of exhaust system and it wears out. The car had about 120,000 miles on when the cat. converter was stolen.

Did you guys get your two catalytic converters stolen? How was the total came out to be around 2000 dollars? Do you think I should've used aftermarket cat. converter to save money? I was just worried that the aftermarket cat. would not work well with O2 sensor since my car has california emissions spec.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just add dual flowmasters and leave off the cat? In Hawaii we can take off our cat but I think it is different for each state.
 
That really stinks. I don't know what your insurence company is doing that to you. It seems like bad business.

Hayn, I'm almost positive that you can't take off your cat in CA. CA has the worst laws on emissions and such. I would not want to live there.

yeah I heard about CA laws. But HI has recon...i believe we are the only state to have that.

For those of you who doesn't know recon. It is a sticker that you put on your bumper. The height of your bumper cant be over a certain height and your tires cant be wider than a certain width. It really sucks because they try to put a cap on the mods we do to our rides.

Damn it I pay my taxes! Leave my ride alone...*****es!!
 
I couldn't imagine a cat/converter replacement being anything more than a couple hundred AT THE MOST. You guys need to stop shopping at the stealerships and shop around. If mine were stolen I'd just bypass it, but I don't live in CA so it wouldn't really matter to me.

I don't live in California, but I was just not sure about aftermarket cat's compatibility with my california spec vehicle. I did not buy the vehicle in california and I bought my car when it was brand new. When it comes to emissions, I just tend to be safe than sorry. I was just worried about check engine light due to aftermarket cat and if it was the case, it would be my loss of money. I was thinking, "what if the aftermarket cat does not work with my vehicle that it keeps triggering CEL?" The emissions test is every two years in my state.

The price of the rear cat for my 02 tacoma is around $640 plus $90 shipping even at trdparts4u, and that is their price with discount. It seems to be higher for 4runners. The aftermarket cats will be around 250 dollars.

Of course, who wants to go to stealership for parts and labor? But the Cali spec cat seems to be only available at the dealer, and the bracket (just a piece of metal) is freaking around 35 dollars(with a 15% coupon).

Well,,, be careful with your vehicles. I hear more and more people getting their airbags, and even doors stolen overnight.
