just got my engine rebuilt. break in advice?

I just got my engine rebuilt from the bottom up. new pistons and all. i have read a bunch about break in procedures, and there are lots of ideas. a knowledgeable person told me that with the procedures and equipment they have now, to just drive it regularly. any advice? thanks

Rebuilt Engine

I would drive my normal speed, but do so for short periods of time and then change speed. Keeping at one speed is not advisable until you have a few hundred mile on the engine. Also, no heavy acceleration during the first few hundred miles. Should keep the RPM,s down. I have driven all my new cars that way and between my wife and I there have been many new cars and I have never had an engine problem and have never had a car that burned oil. That is just my two cents worth, based on experience.
 
If I had a brand new engine I would drive it normal no pedal to the metal or anything just cruise, do a little city driving then get on the highway for maybe a 100 miles or so then back to city and do that for about 500 miles on regular petroleum oil. Check your engine temp regularly.
Then drain that "break in oil" outa there and put in some cheaper Synthetic like Mobil 1 5W30 and run that for about 1500 miles.
During both drains at 500 and 1500 make sure to check the drain pan thoroughly maybe even take a strong magnet and drag it around the oil to see if there are any metal shavings.

Now you got about 2000 break in miles and drained the oil twice.

Then put in Amsoil 5W30 Signature Series and a Amsoil EA oil filter and for the first year I would probably drain the oil every 5000 miles.
After that probably let it go 7000-8000 miles or one year which ever comes first.

Question: Might I ask how much it cost you for the total rebuild?
 
Thanks for reminding me that I got a Steal when buying my 99 Limited, Locked and Lifted for $4300 with 20k on the engine. :P

- I - always broke in my cars driving like I would any other day.. Break it in as you plan to drive it... It'll manage your ECU much better than pu$$yfooting around for the first 5k miles. Oil changes on the other hand.. I have 4 done at the 6k mark. (500, 1500, 3500, 6000).

Regarding the the tip to look for metal shavings.. never went through my head.. Good thinking.

i can't believe it cost that much. is the term rebuild standard? I had new heads put on my truck for $2700 + taxes and Brian2Sun had a rebuild for $3000 roughly.

I cannot believe your cost $5k. A used engine could be found an dropped in for less than $3000.

what did it consist of? Usually that term refers to the top of the engine only and they dont remove the engine from the bay.

Lastly, what city was this?
 
There's a guy up in washington that rebuilds the entire motor and with removal and installation its about $3700, that includes a 5yr 60K warranty.

Thats why I thought $5500 was alot
 
i live in humbodt county. everything is expensive up here. i got a one year warranty. the guy is meticulous. super clean shop. not a metal shaving on the floor. it's smoking (blue) and i talked to hime. he explained that i drove it for like 10-15 miles with two blown head gaskets which ran alot of oil through my exhaust. i knew it was bad at that point and just needed to get it home. i drove 5 miles and it went through 2 gallons of water. had to refill it just to get it home and it took about a gallon and a half more. about he checked it for me. not losing oil, temp is fine. said it might take a week to burn out. it runs better than the day i bought it. more power, very smooth.rebuilt from the bottome up. new pistons, pulleys, tensioner, reground crankshaft, new heads (remanned(i cracked both)), conditioned rods. i had two seized pistons. i'm very pleased with the rebuild. it will just be nice once all of that oil etc is burned out of my exhaust system (catalytic converter included-california rig). any thoughts?

Dude that was 14 years ago. You could get a JDM 5VZ for $600 back then. A good used engine is bare minimum $2000 these days, anything below that is a shot in the dark. With machine work a rebuild unit will easily be double that. There's guys who will charge top dollar and still torque down a head to whatever feels right to them.
