Just hit 4k miles in my Trail

I drove from TN to FL via GA. Then I drove back to GA. I left there Tuesday and drove from GA through AL, MS, TN, AR, OK, TX, NM, AZ, and finally into CA.

The firs time I finally saw another new 2010 T4R on the road was east of Barstow in southern California when I was at 3,500 miles.

Wow the new 4runners are an uncommon sight still!

Also drove past a chain of FJs in the Mojave. Man were they excited to see the new Trail Edition!

4x4 worked well in the snow storm we went through in NM, still love the vehicle!

I'm not sure which one you are referring to: A-TRAC, TRAC, or VSC.

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC in Canada or TRAC in US) are always on in 2WD or 4-Hi unless you turn them off. You can turn TRAC off pushing the VSC off button and you can turn both TRAC and VSC off by holding down the VSC off button.

A-TRAC only works in 4-Lo.


We got waylaid in Gallup New Mexico because the roads were getting pretty terrible and there was 2-5" of snow. When I was putting around the parking lot after checking in to the hotel, I decided to goose the car out of a turn while I was in 2WD. My last car was 10 years old when I sold it so I forgot about all these new fancy bells and whistles. The rear wheels barely even started to slip when VSC kicked in and cut power and actuated the ABS to stop my slide. I was shocked! Then I realized how freaking it cool it was. I also noticed the ABS kicking in a few times when I was approaching stops on ice. The ABS was VERY sensitive when stopping and would just not allow me to slip at all. I really didn't even need 4-Hi because the VSC and ABS were working so well at town speeds (< 30 mph).

I was asking about VSC (Vehicle stability control), because 5th gen 4runners have part-time 4wd and 4hi locks front and rear diffs together. IIRC with 4th gen when you lock the center diff VSC turns off.

In the 5th gen, 4-Hi does not shut off the VSC. Switching it to 4-Lo will however.
