I just found a 2007 base model 4Runner factory radio on Craigslist for $19 to replace my cheap single din Apline with tiny buttons and a broken CD player. After researching connector diagrams for a while, I noticed the 07 radio had a set of new connectors and old connectors so I knew it would just plug and play using my factory harness.
Everything was going smooth and fitting perfect until I tried putting the HVAC center console panel back on and the width of the 07 radio was about an inch wider than the opening of the 96. I made a daring judgement call and decided to cut my center panel using a dremel tool in order to fit the radio. All in all, it took about 2 hours because I slowly trimmed away the plastic to make sure I didn't leave a gap on the sides.
In conclusion, the radio looks great and everything works on it. I.e the illumination dimmer, antenna, CD player, etc. I'm very pleased with how it looks and feels and just wanted to give you guys an insight that it can be done. I know there's a difference in bulb color from the radio and my instrument cluster, but I'm not that picky so it doesn't bother me.
