I simply just have bigger tires otherwise it's all stock and there's plenty of trails that are stock friendly but even a stock 4Runner can go pretty far.

Made the drive to Albquerque, NM there and back in 1 day (my girlfriend and I are exhausted) but I LOVE this truck.

The hood and roof have some oxidation on them, but hell for the deal I got, I don't mind.

welcome Matt, and Congrads on the Runner, I miss my 99..
Theres sooo many "stock" friendly trails close, and with a good spotter, that thing in stock form will go places that will suprise you.
Id do the "grey wire" mod, and Diff, breather mod if your gonna wheel,

just to clear it up, all 3rd gens are shift on the fly 4wd. the 99-00 limiteds and all 01-02 had push button 4wd which has a button on the side of the 4wd stick. also, all limited came with the automatic trans.

just to clear it up, all 3rd gens are shift on the fly 4wd. the 99-00 limiteds and all 01-02 had push button 4wd which has a button on the side of the 4wd stick. also, all limited came with the automatic trans.

i've got a 97' limited with push button. so does my friend with a 96' limited.

"Introduced in 1999, Toyota's multi-mode 4WD system is standard on Limited grade models. The multi-mode 4WD feature is actually a full-time all-wheel-drive system with 2WD capability. The all-wheel 4WD mode may be used in normal driving conditions on all types of roads from dry, hard surface roads, such as pavement, to wet or snow-covered roads. Driving with the multi-mode's all-wheel drive system engaged provides the driver with a more sure-footed feel because power is applied evenly to all four wheels which improves traction.

To switch from 2WD to the all-wheel 4WD mode, simply reduce the vehicle's speed to less than 62 mph and push in the One-Touch "4WD" button located on the front drive control lever knob (on the transfer case the all-wheel 4WD mode is indicated as "H4"). Returning to the 2WD mode is just as easy, depress the "4WD" button once more and the vehicle is again operating in 2WD. "

It is my understanding that all 3rd Gens had that push button to engage a mode of 4 wheel drive. From 99 up that mode changed. It became a full-time all wheel drive like J.A. explanes.

My 1996 had a "J-gate" style shifter that had H2, H4, N and L4. It was an SR5, so it didn't feature the one touch select that J.A. mentions on his site. Here's a quote from the 1997 page:

"All 4WD 4Runner models are equipped with Toyota's 4WDemand shift-on-the-fly engagement system, allowing the part-time 4WD system to be engaged at speeds up to 50 mph. 4Runner Limited models are fitted with a One-Touch Hi-4 switch for push-button 4WD engagement. On all models, the transfer lever is used for shifting from 4WD High to 4WD Low."
