Just ordered an Alpine 12" Type S Sub yesterday

I got it off etronics.com for $79, normally 170 so I was happy, its going to be powered by an Alpine MRP350, 350watts rms at 2ohms. Im going to have my local stereo place build me a sealed box. After buying the sub I realized I also had S type speakers in my car already which was kind of weird that I didn't notice it earlier. I heard the S types aren;t the best for deep deep lows so Im going to go sealed to try to get it out of the sub as best as possible, as well as helping the life and the SQ.

I just ordered speakers last night too. I got 2 Infinity Reference 1240w's from Crutchfield for $99 and $7 shipping. I had priced them at around $100 each, so when I saw the price they had at Crutchfield it was a no brainer.

I was going to get one fo the perfect 12's, but with 2 reference I can get the ohm's lower to get more power out of my high current amp, and the extra speaker will make the sensitivity about the same as well.

I'm going to build the boxes myself. They're going in the back of my xcab truck so it should be easy enough. I've never used infinity subs before so I'm axious to hear them.

I just got 2 12" type-s subs installed in a custom built sealed box powered by the alpine monoblock 605. They sound great! Tight bass with no distortion at loud volumes. I'll post pictures soon.

So with the 4runner, mines a 3rd gen, woud I be giving it 14.4 volts or 12 volts?

How long did it take your shop to design and construct your custom enclosure and how much did it cost? Two custom shops around here want $50/hour and $60/hour, respectively, to design a stealth-type enclosure but either gave ballpark times that seemed too low (around 2 hours...seems like that's not enough time for more than a couple layers of fiberglass) or wouldn't give a ballpark figure at all.

It was just a custom mdf box, not fiberglass. took them 4 hours because they were working on another car. they hooked me up because the box was 250 alone. they charged me 300 total to install the amp and wiring and build the box and install the subs.

It's a custom box because it's built to fill up the width of the cargo area, but as shallow as possible so I don't lose much cargo room. also, they build it to the specs of the sub so they get the proper volume in order to sound good.

The place around me wants about 120 for labor and 20 for material to make a simple sealed box. Does that sound about right? I figure if I didnt get theres I would buy a qlogic for 120 so Id rather they made it for me to fit the sub.

No its purely for the box. I thik they wanted like 276 for installation, but that includes making the box and installing everything. I might takeit somewhere else tho

wow.....i would take it somewhere else also. I paid 300 total for mine and that's installation of 2 12"s, an amp, and custom box build. IMO, everything should not cost you more than 200 if you're just doing a basic mdf box. if it's fiberglass, then that price sounds right.

BTW, I have a 4th gen and i'm running it at 12v.

Do you guys just want completely professional looks or do you not know how to do it yourselves?

I just went to Lowe's today and got a 4'x8' sheet of 3/4" MDF and am in the process of building my own boxes. I bought a Q-Logic box for my wife's truck, and am making copies of it for mine. It's a nice looking box that comes in right at 1.25 cubic feet after you stick a speaker in it.

It's a really simple box design and I cut and assembled one this afternoon in about an hour. The cuts don't have to be perfect, because you silicone the inside and cover the outside with carpet.

Since I am just replacing speakers, I'll only have the speakers, wood, silicone, screws and speaker wire in this. $106 shipped for the speakers, and maybe $30 for everything else.

You can get a decent wiring kit from Walmart for $20-30 and the rest is just time...

Of course this has always been a hobby of mine. I've probably installed 20 systems over the years. Nothing spectacular here, but it will look ok and sound great.

In my case, I use my vehicle to haul things from time to time (telescopes, guitar rigs, hiking gear, etc) and I don't want to bother with loading and unloading a sub box so I'd very much like something that doesn't get in the way.

I just bought an IDQ10v.2 which is only about 5.5" deep and only needs 0.5 cuft sealed enclosure so it should work okay in a box that either fits over the wheel well or even built into the storage compartment above the well. With only a jigsaw and a circular saw, I'm not sure how I'd fashion this sort of enclosure from MDF. I'd very much like to hear from someone if they've built this sort of enclosure themselves.

In general, fiberglassing seems pretty straightforward if time consuming but even after reading several tutorials, there are enough things that make me scratch my head that I'm reluctant to try.

too bad I cant remember anything....
I am also buying a 10" sub and have a huge need to keep the rear space as flat as possible, if anyone has any suggestions could you please help.

Check out the qlogic box that goes on the passenger side compartment in the trunk.

i have the type s sub too, got it a month ago, sounds great, but came in a mated bandpass box by alpine that is too big for me since i need the storage, i think i might sell it, but otherwise the alpine type s subs seem to be great.

The alpine Type S series is a great series for those looking for a mixture of SPL and SQ...Im more impressed with them vs the Type R.

Im an infinity whore though and as such I have had nothing but infinity in my cars (except for the type S's in my truck now). Their warranty, quality, performance are all top notch, as is their price most of the time..
