Just picked up my first 3rd gen...

Needed a new weekend beater/ Wife vehicle after our Expedition was wrecked, hit by a driver with no insurance...it took the hit very VERY well and I wasnt hurt, but it tweaked the body and bent the frame. So after doing some looking for Sequoia's and not finding one close enough that I could look at or one on shape I wanted to consider..I started looking at 99 and up T4R's.

Found this 2000 with 228k miles and was pretty clean. It does need a few things lol..
Timing belt and Water pump were last done at 108k
Coolant is pretty dirty but no oil in it
Slight valve cover leak
Muffler/exhaust repair
I hate the tires
Dash and hvac panel bulbs are pretty dim
AC doesn't blow cold
Antenna is broken
Left front chrome fender trim is missing and I havent decided if im going to to just remove them all along with the step bars or just find that one replacement
Few little odd and ends on the interior but its not all beat up and working at a full service tire/repair shop this stuff will get knocked out easy. I keep telling myself its going to stay stock with the freshening up and new stereo bits buuuuuuut we know how that goes lol.
Dont wanna lift it too high cuz the wife wont wheel it so maybe just a 2in on stock sized tires - but I havent even priced lifts for these so who knows.

Looks like a really clean one. And a prime example of why I personally prefer the cloth over the leather. They hold up far better over time and use.

I actually prefer leather just because of stains,holding smells..blah blah blah but this truck actually seems to be a non smoker and I'm the 3rd owner so its not that that other than normal wear and tear.

I have a love/hate relationship with leather seats. When they are new, they look so good, feel so good, and smell good too. But we aren't driving some early Cadillac with leather that survives 30 years of abuse. 3rd gen leather seats fall apart faster than a slice of apple crumble on a fork. Kind of shame really, but then again even new the leather in the limited units didn't really look all that great.

Curious what you mean by "weekend beater/wife vehicle", that phrase is ripe for the pickin'!

Just finished the Valve cover gaskets on mine. doing them and the timing belt/water pump at the same time will greatly reduce your labor time on the projects. You should also consider doing the radiator at the same time if you dont know how old it is, or put in a separate transmission cooler. Seems many here on the forum recommend changing it every 100k to avoid the pink milkshake

I'll check it for leaks but its is good i won't replace it. It will be getting tb/wp and ALL fluids and belts changed. Along with plugs and valve cover gaskets. New tires and whatever else.

Lol well it will mainly be driven by the wife on weekend's and for like grocery runs. That's what our Expedition was for.... she would drive it to work every now and then, a 140-150 mile trip but after they shrunk her parking garage at work it wouldn't fit.
So that's what this will be lol

My expy was in great shape for 195k miles.

Good Find. The interior is like new!
Mine is at 210K miles and interior is like new too! Like Hepar said, leather seats at this mileage would be in a terrible shape.

Repairs and what to use:

Coolant is pretty dirty but no oil in it: USE TOYOTA RED COOLANT. STAY WITH OEM PARTS AS THESE ARE CHEAP AND WILL LAST YEARS

AC doesn't blow cold : ADD NEW FREON AND SEE. Mine is at 210 K miles and still original AC and ICE COLD IN West TX weather.

Antenna is broken: Mine is the same so keep it like that

I just grabbed a 2000 4runner limited with leather that looks pretty darn good. 185k miles on it.

Mine does have a bit more miles on it than I wanted but I technically dont have any money into...even with a good bit of the maintenance work I have to do to it. It will be very hard to not mod it, at the most it will get a 2in lift and maybe some 17in newer takeoff's with slightly larger tires.....but other than a new stereo,antenna and speakers its staying pretty much stock.

New radiator(because of the possibility of incurring the pink milkshake), new lower ball joints(because of the possibility of the original ones failing at this mileage). Everything else is standard boilerplate used car checks and services.
Get a Factory Service Manual (FSM) and the Haynes manual.

As other's said the truck looks great! My 2002 SR5 was in a similar situation to yours when I bought it a 1 year and 10k miles ago.

I'll never understand the shouting for ONLY Toyota red coolant around here, it's still ethylene glycol like regular green stuff. Personally I used Prestone lifetime coolant, diluted with distilled water, and it's been fine for the past year.

On the other hand using OEM parts in certain situations definitely holds water. If you see anything branded as Aisin or Denso it's likely OEM since they're a major supplier to Toyota. For example, you can get the Aisin timing belt/water pump kit which is identical to the red box Toyota kit but for less money.

If you do lower ball joints though, almost everyone will agree to use OEM ONLY even though they're pricey.

nice find! i just got a 96, theres only a slight teat in the drivers side cloth seat, but other than that the interior is clean. I believe a previous owner was a painter because of the amount of paint stains in the cargo space, so ive still got some cleaning to do when i find time. Glad youre part of the family now, welcome
