Just picked up my first 4runner...

Hi everyone!
After several weeks of craigslist hunting and lurking here and over at yotatech, I've found a replacement for my dearly departed Jeep XJ (say what you will about build quality but that 4.0 was bulletproof),
I settled on a %100 stock '99 4Runner with the 2.7l 4cyl engine and 175k miles.
Consider me converted! The smaller engine has taken some getting used to, but so far I am loving my new truck and can see what I've been missing out on all these years comfort-wise, which is really where she blows my old jeep out of the water.

here are a few pics of my new baby
she's in pretty great shape, with the only issues I've noticed so far being a finicky drivers side power window, slightly warped brake rotors, and and a small amount of smoke coming from the left side of the engine after recent highway driving...
was told thats either from a loose valve cover/ bad gasket, or residue sucked into the manifold from when the dealership power-washed the engine?

Anybody out there with the 4cyl engine have any tips for squeezing a bit more
power out without killing gas mileage?
Was looking into maybe attempting the deckplate mod and installing a K&N air filter for starters...
I'm mechanically inclined, but far from a master mechanic, and for the time being I dont have much to work with tool wise.

Thanks!
