just purchased 87 4runner/?'s help!

The 22re with 232,000 miles but was supposedly rebuilt at 200k. I have just changed all filters, oil, plugs, o2 sensor, catalytic convertor and ran gas treatment and fuel injector cleaner through a full tank of gas since it sat for about 5 months not being driven a whole lot. Its a 5 speed, it does not have autolockers and all seems pretty original except the soft top and some nice 31x10.50 BFG mud terrains. I bought it for the reputation of the motor, supposed good fuel mileage and I've always liked them and wanted one

I only got about 240 miles to the full tank, about 14 mpg I have been reading stories and epa claims of 20mpg. is it the larger tires maybe?? Doesnt seem to me like the tires should effect the mpg so much. any suggestions on what else it might be?

I live in Costa Rica so its not so easy just going down the road for a part,

Its hard to start when cold, usually need about 4 cranks and then a little rough for a few seconds them smoothes out. I have read this is the cold start injector valve, does this sound like the problem I have? If yes where is it located? any other ideas on what it might be?

I do surf or try at least, Im from Texas so thats my excuse for not being good plus I live in the valley here, a few hours from the beach.. The waves here are awesome though!

when my 87 22re/auto had 31's and I got 18.75 mpg. Dont trust your fuel gauge, carry some extra fuel and see how many miles you get on your trip meter.

The larger tires affect two things:

1) Perceived gas mileage. Assuming those tires are about 9% larger than stock, using your odometer/trip meter probably results in 14mpg. Adjusting for 9% error, you mileage should be closer to 15.25mpg. (which is still low);

2) Larger tires decrease fuel efficiency as they affect geometry and increase drag.

31s were stock on some runners, tho. If the OP checks his VIN tag he should be able to determine his stock gears. That'll tell him if his 31s are stock, or if he needs to recalibrate and regear.

But either way, I wouldn't think they ought to be dragging the mileage down that much.
