Your best bet is to venture towards Appalachia. Only a couple hours from you.

Uwharrie is probably the closest, legal, and most challenging place to go.. that is close.
Went there a few times, it's fun.
Hit up youtube and do some off road searches in your area.

I'm in Chapel Hill as well but haven't had much time to do any trails. I know that most people in the area either head to Uwharrie which is about an hour from here or Boone which is about three hours. You might want to post in the Carolinas section of this forum as well to get a few more replies. There is also a facebook page that you might want to check out. Welcome and hopefully see you around!

I'm sort-of local, in Rocky Mount. I work in Raleigh. The closest trails are at Uwharrie. I don't wheel, mainly because I don't ever have any time (young kids, and school has just started back) and there's nothing close. Further west in the mts there is probably more. Also, if you like the coast, there are areas of the outer banks where you can drive on the beach, like camping out by the water, surf fishing trips, etc.
I see a pic with MTB's. I love mountain biking, but haven't been doing that lately due to tons of other issues with higher priority... but I try to get out as much as I can. There are some decent MTB trails in the area. In the Cary area is Lake Crabtree Park. Ride it now, there are rumors it'll be gone in the near future. RDU airport owns the land and they are looking to develop. Sanford are is close and pretty good. Look up TriangleMTB.com, your source for mountain biking in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill. Lots of info on local and area trails.

Another good spot for off road beaches is Carolina Beach. Spent a many weekends there as a local.
Check out Freeman Park (north end) and fort fisher. Freeman park is a pretty good time. Park your truck, pitch the tents, start a fire, drink beer, dog friendly, and throw some lines out in the water.
Gets really packed on holiday weekends... almost turns into a two lane beach, giant party. Any questions, let me know!
