Just Stripped my Transmission plug!

As I was doing a drain and fill on my automatic transmission, I managed to strip the bolt. I have done this a few times before but never had this happen, I never even felt it really get tight.

I have a feeling I may now have to replace the pan, but can I possibly seal the bolt so it won't leak for now? I don't think I will need to change it for a good while anyway.

Any help is much appreciated.

if its not leaking when fully engaged and not fully torqued, i'd suggest using some thread seal (not too much to allow any teflon to get into the transmission- try building up the teflon in a conical shape out) and strap the plug in place, temporarily, definitley have the pan repaired, have the threading rebuilded with welding, ream the hole and have it re-threaded,

I stripped a drain plug on an old mazda 323 some years ago, and did exactly that, I had the hole built up and rethreaded, had to remove the pan though, but the strap kept that bugger in place till the next oil change with no leaks.

if a new pan is not that much replace it.

I would first check if the pan stripped or the bolt did. My last change, the bolt was done, however the pan threads were in good shape.

I stripped mine too. I found that I was able to tap the threads from the inside and re-thread it.

Thanks for the help folks. As of now, my friend came by and helped me tap it and put in a new bolt. It may have been a blessing in disguise as it look like it needed a new filter anyway. Nothing serious, but metal dust is what I would call it, on the magnets. I may put in a good in line filter for that junk in the near future when I hook up the tranny cooler.
