Hey, whats goin' on guys/gals. I have some questions or maybe I just want to vent a little bit, I don't know but here goes. I currently drive a '90 Chevy K5 Blazer and decided to get rid of it due the $4.13 SoCal gas prices and have been looking for another Toyota truck. I've owned a '06 Taco AC 4x4 and sold it! Long story and don't ask. Anyways, I've been looking for a 1st gen DC Taco but the price for those things are higher then I'm willing to pay, right now. So, plan B would be a T4R. But if it's going to be a truck, any truck, it has TO BE a 4x4. To make a long story short. My sister in law needs to get rid of one of her vehicle (a '98 4 Runner Limited 4x2) My wife insist that we buy it because the price is right....only $1000 family discount. We took it home to test drive it for a week and I must have to admit, the truck drives like a champ even with 230k+ miles on it. I guess I have to bite the bullet and and suck it up for now and just drive a 4x2. I have 2.5 years left in the Marine Corps and we plan on getting another vehicle when I EAS but this is just a temp vehicle to save $ on gas and is a 4 dr for wife, baby, and me.

I guess here's the question. Some you guys have some sick ass trucks. I know I can't do to this truck what I did with my old Taco. So, what can I do with a 4x2? I still love getting dirty/muddy etc etc. Is it even worth it to hook up the truck suspention wise? I pretty much know what I want to do with the interior/exterior but not so sure with the lift/shocks (if any).

Thanks guys for any tips/advice/input or whatever y'all have to say. GOSH, I wish she'd drove a 4x4!!!!!!!!!

Nothing wrong with a 2wd.
Unless you plan to rock crawl you'd be impressed with a locked or LSD'd 2wd.
you want a daily anyway right? With gas prices and if it's affecting you enough. Off roading would be in the back of my head at the moment.

And 1000 is a hell of a deal.

I think I've decided to just bite the bullet and suck it up for about 2 years and just drive the truck. Besides some minor suspention mods, engine mods, and exterior/interior mods that's it. I save the $ for the actual 4x4 Yoda. I'm not gonna get lockers, and when I got out wheelin' with the guys I'll just be sandwich by 2 4x4's and they can tow my happy ass out hahaha
 
Haha yea well I'm against lockers as well unless it was a weekend off road toy but for daily I'm very satisfied with the truetrac on and off road.
Nothing wrong with a 2wd :)
 
so ... a 98 4Runner 2WD with 230K miles that runs like a champ for only $1000? Sounds like a deal to me. Why don't you drive it for a year then sell it and buy what you really want.

Can you post some pics?
 
For $1000, I'd buy that all day long. I'd give it what it needed to bring it up on maintenance and ensure it's safe, a few mods here and there for your enjoyment, and sell when you're ready to get a 4x4 and make money on it. You could do a LOT worse for $1000.
 
Since you saved on the 4runner, why not take the extra money you saved and buy a trail rig. Get a 1st gen cheap and start building. Then you don't have to worry about messing your daily driver up. :reddance:
 
My father instinct is kicking in so I'll speak my piece. Do with it what you will:

You are young. Really young. And you have a baby and a young wife.

10 years from now the fact that this 4Runner is 4wd or not is not going to even be on your radar.

Don't sweat the small stuff right now. A few years from now you'll be out of the Corp, making some money, have a VA and can buy what you want.

Thats my advice.
 
Only reason why I'm getting it for a $1000 is because of family and if it was up to me I'll for sure get a 4x4. I'll get some Mods done but if y'all know the old lady then you know what I have t deal with. Don't get me wrong, she's a great woman and I love her to death but...............nuff said hahaha.

I don't have any pics of it yet. Still in the shop getting some stuff done to it. Preventative maintenance. When I get it back next week I shot a couple snap shots for y'all.

I want to start putting the off road mods to get out &dirty but then i have the same issues with money, time, daily driver. However, family proves to always have your back and be blessed with this car. You got what you need for now so take it day by and your 4Runner will be there to take you through each day.Be well.

Get it! Keep it and sell it when you find the right truck, for $1000 that's a steal. If you decide to keep it, you can SAS it or turn it into a nice prerunner with a long travel kit. :AK47:
 
That's the nicest $1000.00 vehicle I've ever seen! I once bought... back in...2002...a 1987 Nissan Pathfinder 2dr, 4wd. The damn thing was rotten everywhere, and I paid $1000.00 for it! Whether it's 2wd or 4wd...that truck is in GREAT shape! Like other's said, you could drive it for a year or more, and sell it for more than you paid!:hatsoff:
