Guys,

I just won this truck on ebay. I have 48hrs to give the deposit. It was an impulse buy and I really wasnt expecting to win it, but now I did so I am going to see if I can get the transaction done. The car is in nowhere PA and I need to have it shipped, been quoted 1200 so far.

Toyota : 4Runner | eBay

Any input on the price $6500 or any other advise on whether or not the car is a good buy would be appreciated. I heard that people like the 4cyl better than the v6 for some reason, any info on this? It seems like a good deal for the miles, I have a 2wd 2000 limited and it runs great at 175k. Im just looking for peoples 2 cents on this.

Thanks

If the seller was accurate on the "pampering" and whatnot then I think you got a fair deal. The v6 is the preferred engine in the 4R. The I4 doesn't have enough power, especially after a lift, tires, and other added weight. It may be cheaper to fly in and drive it home too, but I don't know hoe far away you are or any of the other variables.

It has some bumper rust, and it looks like the rocker panels and rear quarter panels are rusting a bit as well. Now, the frame looks decent, but that could be black makeup.

I love the rugged look of it. Kind of want a 2nd Gen myself after looking at those pics. I definitely need one of those windshield visors.

Have the front and rear diffs been regeared to match those big 35" tires? if so what ratio?
Will it pass a safety inspection in your state with that 6" lift?
And what kind of lift is it? that's a lot of lift for an IFS truck, is it done right?
The ad concentrates more on the dress up details like lights and stereo than the important stuff.

And $6500 sounds quite high .

You read the vehicle history report as well, right? It appears it was up for auction twice, and had a titling issue as well. It would appear that the care it received for its first 60K would be a total mystery.

The truck does look clean! Good luck with it! As long as your happy with your purchase, that's all that counts.

Get the owner to deliver it to a dealer or a mechanic you pick local to him and get it inspected. Then you will have a professional 3rd party opinion on the condition and quality of build.
I have purchased two cars on eBay, and got screwed on the second. If I had done this, I would have been able to back out, no harm. Instead, I had to do 5K in repairs to get it to pass PA inspection.

That price seems really high. I looked for a 4Runner for months and I get that that one is kitted up, but that doesn't mean it's WORTH more. Plus, I would never buy a car that old from up North. It's guaranteed to have rust issues.

I was going to suggest you look for a cheap one you can customize, but I realize that not everyone likes a project. I just bought a stock one for $700, but I spent all morning sanding it down and prepping for paint...you wouldn't have to do that with that one, but sheesh, for almost 6 grand, I'd sweat a little.

Not to be an ass but maybe you should of thought of all these things (like cost of shipping, getting a pre-purchase inspection done, etc) BEFORE you actually placed a bid. I have done that in the past so I know what the exact condition is before I bid. I am then comfortable knowing exactly what I am getting.

It is not fair to the seller for you to back out of the deal now. You Bid, you won, you pay for it, and you OWN it.

Im located in Las Vegas, The owner said he does not know if it has been regeared, but he suspects it has because its quite powerful. He bought the truck lifted.

Bro if your in vegas you should be able to find a clean, rust free 2nd gen for under 3000 and then mod it your self. I say too high IMHO. Hit craigslist in vegas, Phoenix and other SW city's. They are out there. and I call BS that the 3.0 is quite powerful even re-geared.

Plus the "he expects it has" just reeks of BS. It really means "I have no idea but I'll tell you anything to sell this".

In what world?? V6's are pretty underpowered too. Not to mention headgasket after headgasket. I'd say back out of the sale and look for a regeared 4cyl. the 22re may be a bit slow.. but I haven't met anyone who has ever had a choice between 22re and 3vze and picked the latter.

There are plenty of 2nd Gen 4Runners for sale in Phoenix. I look all the time. Some are stock, some are tarted up, and some are trash. But the prices match what you get. For 6500, here is your choice of cars:

phoenix cars & trucks - by owner classifieds "4Runner" - craigslist

I got SCREWED (more like RAPED) on an eBay auto purchase. Good luck with this deal.

Only 84,000 miles put on it in 18 years? yeah right... has this been flat-out proven somehow? the odometer is saying that this 4Runner has only been driven about 4,666 miles per year since 1993.

666 ... not good
:(

x2...
good questions to ask before sending any money. if he hesitates or seems like he is lying then i would tell him to put it back up for sale.
i would much rather spend 6500 on a used 3rd gen and fix it up than a possibly abused 2nd gen.
this may be slightly bias since i dont like the 2nd gens anyways... just sayin
