after a few weeks of researching, reading and a ~5 hour job, a quick thread to give a shout to everyone on T4R for help in installing an aftermarket stereo.
special thanks to harper7, kingpin748 and adio3x for their quick responses to specific questions.
although the AVIC is a favorite here, after taking a hard look at the 120 and 920, the NT3HDT offered the best bang-for-the-buck for me. for DVD, BT, iPod, Sat capabilities, GPS/Nav w/ Google Maps Street Director Assistant, upgradeable firmware, detachable face and built-in HD radio w/ Total Traffic Lifetime updates, all for ~$699, it couldn't be beat.

couple notes:
*HD built-in is huge: in addition to the Total Traffic Plus (check it out on JVC website: news, sports, weather, traffic, all real-time, all free), in the Boston area, there's ~45 HD stations broadcasting FM multicast and AM. being a talk-radio guy, it's cool having the shows in stereo
*Metra dash kit was a perfect fit/perfect match, easy to install w/ less hardware than stock. only thing, as can be seen in pics, i did nick up the edge of the slot a bit cutting the plastic for the Double Din
*Axxess Steering Wheel control was the bigest PITA: even after talking to T4R members, Installer . Com, printing the instructions off the website, connecting one wire wrong, trying multiple resets and manual programming, only the volume/mode/track (left side of wheel)buttons work. the three BT buttons on right don't do anything. unless someone can offer help, i can live w/ it.
*didn't hook up reverse signal lead: it was going to be a process and although i had a '09 Pathfinder w/ backup displayed in the 7" monitor and miss it, i can live w/ the rearview mirror camera.
*didn't hook up speed lead either. didn't really need it.
*i grounded the brake lead for Nav imputs/changes while moving more than watching DVDs.
*for whatever reason, setting the Reverse Signal Polarity option in Settings to Ground (which is how it was wired), had me going BACKWARDS on the Nav screen! it needed to be set to Battery. not sure why but everything is fine now. although pretty funny: the map progressing up and the arrow moving backwards, i thought i had a bunk unit. good thing i gave it one more go.
