Like everything, it means squat without context, which is lacking. As for the "results", they set up a test to measure restriction in airflow (as represented by the inches of water in a graduated column) as they add a specific grade of dust in a precise amount over a specific time. In this case, they created roughly 14 inches of vacuum on the backside of a clogged filter.

What is missing, as I mentioned, is context. How does a Toyota 4Runner OEM filter perform under the same test? What happens when you apply it to a real car rather than a superflow bench tester? How is it affected by different amounts of oil in the filter? And how much dust was allowed past the filter in those scenarios?

This is nothing new for K&N. They tend to produce tests that fail to do anything but reach conclusions with no context. It's like claiming that you are smart because you passed some tests; which tests, on what subjects, and how did others score relative to you?
 
I ordered the intake. After past good experience with one in my 4th Gen, I will give the new one a try and let everyone know. I'll be making a road trip in it and see how the gas mileage does and sound, etc.
 
Im very interested in buying this CAI for my SR5 but it says its not CARB approved, hence i assume it would fail an emissions test since i live in the "glorious" state of NJ? I know California and NY have similiar standards...

does anyone know of or has failed an inspection due to a modified intake?

LOL, what a crock.

You pay $50 for a filter that performs and yields the same results as a stock filter. This snake oil has been around for a while, the results come back the same every time. Little to no improvement in mileage or power improvement and possible engine damage. If you wash and reuse it more than a couple of times you can never get it completely clean again and you also run the risk of not getting a good seal or a hole in the filter element during the washing process.
 
Not a fan of K&N at all...

With my last Prerunner, I coincidentally had my air fuel sensor go out on me just weeks after cleaning the "reusable" K&N air filter. I've cleaned them before and it's easy to follow the instructions exactly... but it just sounds like a bad idea to keep putting an old filter back in with new sprayed on oils.
I'm pretty sure that is what caused the $220 air fuel sensor to go.:dammit:
