ok ive been looking at posts about filters and seen some. but im confused ive seen some 4 runners with the air filter coming out and being visible but on my 1999 4x4 SR5 it is not visible. Are there multiple types of air filters?

I want an air filter but i want a good price easy installation no drilling or anything. And if i did get an airfilter what can i expect preformance wise?

air fliter arent worth it. alot of 4runner onwer did the "isr" and deckplate. the deckplate mod will give you a little gain on some power. i just did the deckplate two weeks ago and can tell that the throttle is better. i did the isr mod a few months back, but i put back in. due to check engine light that popped on. i didnt feel a difference in the "isr mod"

took me about 5 min at Home Depot to find the opening i wanted cost $8. took about 5 min to pull out the intake box. took about 15 min to meassure, cut the hole, and add a screen with a 4" clamp. screen was left over from my project of making house screen, clamp was bought from home depot for $2. total time is around 30 min if you know what the heck you are doing. easy mod for under $15 bucks.

i got extra screen if you need some. just pm me and i can have my gf's company mail it out to you. at your cost of FREE!:D

and after i posted i looked at the cost of the k&N preformance filters at like 281$ for 9 hp is out of my price range. thanks for the help tho. those are some nice wheels on your pic looks good :bigok:
 
Just for a heads up thats $281 for a intake system, not just the filter. And filters do seem useless to upgrade unless you perform a deckplate or elbow removal mod, which is just a single restrictive air intake peice that can be removed and will perform a very similarly to the deckplate mod. I believe that an air filter which costs around $40 will increase hp over the stock when the filter is combined with a deckplace/elbow removal mod.
 
would it be a good idea to just replace the stock air filter with a k&n? instead of doing any mods or preformance? Im not willing to dish out that money and i dont think i could do the mod.
 
your more capable of doing it then you think. got a saw & a screwdriver? thats the main tool you need. the rest is just meassure and tighten.

k2boarder-Many of us on the forum are running the TrueFlow air filter which just replaces the factory air filter. There is some talk of improved throttle response, but the best gains (dyno proven) come in combination with the deckplate modification.

I am not handy with tools myself but there are several writeups out there on this, and I feel I can handle it. You will too, nothing is that difficult. We'll all help you to get it done.

to get a few postings related to it. We will all help talk you through it and get it done.

Yes the airbox gets removed and a marine deckplate is cut into and attached to the front of the airbox. A deckplate allows you to run the 4Runner with the screw in insert removed from the plate attached to the airbox. The upside of the mod is that if you run in deep deep water, you simply screw the insert back into place.

I think a "hole saw" can be used or a Dremel or similar high speed tool to make the 3", 4", or 5" opening (depending on size of deckplate you choose). Most writeups seem to recommend the 4" size for the 3rd gen Runners.

I just assembled all the pieces and parts and will likely take this on this weekend. But, like all mods, I encourage you to read up on it and feel confident in what you are doing. You will end up modifying your factory air box which scares some folks off who want to keep their trucks all "original".

And yes you can use a K&N filter in the Runner's airbox, but I have not read good results for it. I believe there was a drop of around 5hp if I recall correctly.

The K & N FIPK intake is a more involved system and is not just an airfilter, but replaces the factory airbox with an exposed filter element and piping. You should be able to get within 1 horsepower of the FIPK results with the deckplate mod. Dyno results showed 7-8 additional horsepower with the screw in insert removed from the deckplate.

I encourage you to check out YOTA TECH as they have a summary of mods that can be done to the 3rd gens and the Tacomas of this age.

You will be modifying your rig in no time.....:awais:

thanks k2 I will let you know how it goes-I was just reading about your Flowmaster 40 and that thing must sound pretty bass deep on the Runner.

but I may delay the deckplate mod for a weekend as we are entertaining thoughts of running up to Steamboat Springs this weekend for the pro rally tour. Travis Pastrana and the rally crowd.... woooooo

I hear everyone say it should take an hour so double that for me and my fumble fingers.

If you have not yet done the rear differential breather extension I can also talk you through that one -just did it a week back or so. There is some mention that it may help to prevent rear axle seal failures, so I made that one my priority.

oh ya and thanks, also im jealous of your 5 spd i wanted a manual but they are very rare ive never seen a 99 5 speed. :bigok: id like to see some pics it sounds like a nice ride
 
I swap around between a OEM filter and a K&N drop-in but really I don't notice a diff. Once the deckplate was done I did notice a little better throttle and a little more power in the mid-range but MPGs might have gone up 1mpg but that little of a gain can be attributed to many other factors but it was such a cheap mod and easy to do it was worth the $15 I spent.

I will just say that anything short of a supercharger or turbocharger, you will not notice any difference with simple bolt-on's. This is not an LS1-equipped vehicle. Just a 3.4L V6 workhorse that will last you a long time. If you want speed, get an SRT-8 Jeep.

If anything, just do the deckplate mod. Cheap and simple. TruFlow is a good filter. Not for performance, but long-term $$ savings. Personally, I just use OEM paper filters, which filter quite well (read bobistheoilguy.com). I will never use K&N filters again. Just personal opinion--lets not start another K&N filter vs awesome/garbage thread. :D
 
I did the K&n FIPK ... I took me about 2 hrs .I did notice quicker Throttle response. I have not paid too much attention to the MPG'S yet.
 
Noisy K&N FIPK

I recently picked up a '99 4WD 4Runner. It has the K&N Cold Air Intake/Fuel Injection Performance Kit. I couldn't tell you if there is a noticable power increase as I can't compare before and after the installation.

I can tell you that it is LOUD. At some speeds, the noise seems to resonate in the interior of the car. Very annoying. Any other 4Runner owners with the K&N kit think the noise is too much? Any way to quiet it down a bit?

HAHAHA.. Mine is Loud too!! The kicker is that i have the TRD exhaust on it too!! So that makes it even louder! I dont know of any way to quiet it down either....
what's done is done I guess... The Throttle response is better though... Like i said i have not measured milage yet.
