K&N Air Intake

I put one in my 1997 T4R, it seemed worth it but to significantly be able to verify what the specific pluses and or minuses were or are would be next to impossible with my limited or should I say zero availability in test equipment.
The feature of being able to rinse out the filter after applying the solution to dislodge dust,bugs, and all other foreign impurities lodged in the paper mesh of the filter was kinda cool, it can sort of, over time pay for it's self from a TCO perspective.
Sounds nice too, the sound makes you feel like your going faster, and it may well be a psychological mind trick, as in YOU psyching yourself out, after all you did drop some significant cash on this addition so your expectancy of return is high, naturally.
Installation is TOO easy which makes made me wonder is something this easy to do really going to give me what I think it is?

From all the research I have done in the area I was most interested in the Trueflow xdi intake and thats what I have on the way right now.

k&n
ive used k&n filters on various vec. for years. i like em, but you have to be careful with any WET filter & the oil. overtime it can be sucked onto the MAF sensor which then needs cleaning. you can always switch to a DRY filter if need be. im switching right now myself to the new volant powercore dry filter, $ though.

WET filter? I simply thought this was a "Dry" filter. Just like any other. It even states you can use you hose and clean it. It this not correct?

Included is the solution I mentioned before, and the oil to help the filter become moist to help attract and capture impurities.
I've also hear the oil can cause that same sensor spoken of here to fail. But just a rumor I guess.

more than just a rumor, (do a search for it on this forum & toyota120) just replaced the maf in my 06 that went bad. could be just a co wink e dink, but then i thought that if it were at all possible to foul it up, (yea , wiped down tube also) what was entering the TB? , so for me, dry just seems like a better choice, a little less cleanimg to do. by the way, it was a brand new filter, not one i cleaned & reoiled. could be just a fluke cause i never had a problem with the one in my jeep (had it 10 years & oiled twice.), i did have the same problem with it in my stang . but dont let this stop you.

I too was thingking of getting an intake, but has anyone had experience in off roading with these. Especially when it comes to water crossings? I can't help but wonder if the rear facing pipe that is stock is better for that reason, and or if going straight to a snorkel is the way to go.

mine was ok in the jeep i had but i used a cover you can buy for them, (just on filter) but if you dont get a mostly enclosed box unit, water might/will get splashed up on it. depending how deep of water or mud your crossing & engine bay shields. id say if your worried, get a brand that is more enclosed or snorkel it. i mean, if ya look at the pic. of the k&n unit on this thread, its not protected much, so the cover is advisable at least for off roading, youll still need to clean the dust off though.

I will never use a KN filter on a car with a mass air flow sensor like the 4runner uses again. I had one in a Ford Tbird and it would contaminate the sensor and it would have to be cleaned. My Jeep does not use mass air so I use a KN so I can clean and reuse it. On my 4runner I use one of my old filters when I am going to be in a lot of dust on a off road trip and then reinstall my good filter at the end of the day.
