K&N last week listed a cold air intake for the 2010 4Runner engine, adds 13HP, not sure if it needs a tuner, probably gonna order one this weekend after bills are paid

I do. I got it last week and installed it. It's a pretty easy installation. I can definitely tell a difference. The filter itself is huge and the pipe is also large. The throttle lag when hitting the gas has shortened a lot. I can feel the extra torque when I punch it. Also in cruise control, the engine doesn't try as hard. As far as MPG, I've gained about 2 mpg. The only thing is it's loud as hell. And by loud as hell, I mean it, but only at full throttle. Otherwise, it's not so bad.

I'll be taking a long road trip this weekend to Lubbock for the Tech game, so I'll really be able to test it.

Can you take a couple pics when you get a chance?

I would really apreciate it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thx

I sure will when I get home tonight. It comes with a heat shield top that is removable, so I'll take pics with it on and off.

As for pricing I got it from Autoanything.com for ~$320. They were running a free shipping/10% off and it looks like they still are. http://www.autoanything.com/air-intakes/61A1913A0A0.aspx

where does the filter sit? behind the bumper/headlight? is this just a short ram? or a cai?

as far as noise. what kind of noise? just air being pushed thru a filter, or a cai sound?

It's a cai. It sits in the same spot as the stock air box. In combination of the heat shield and the heat shield cover, it's basically enclosed to protect from engine heat. As far as the sound, imagine the sound of the engine at full throttle, then imagine it being amplified by a performance muffler and that is what it sounds like at full throttle. So cai sound. At regular throttle it's note very noticeable other than the sucking or "turbo" noise from air coming through the filter. I'll post pics tonight.

Sounds a little pricey for what it is. A short ram intake with heat shield. I might consider it if the throttle response and fuel saving is there.

Coming from a vq3.5 the 4r is quite slow getting up the mountain.

I had a K&N FIPK for my old pickup, I could definitely tell a difference after I stuck it on it. I did find it on ebay for considerably less than anywhere else I was looking...dunno if they are out there on ebay yet though.

Here are pics!

How is this a Cold Air Intake? I'm not trying to be snarky, I am seriously asking as it appears to be drawing in air from the engine compartment.

I will grant that they have smoothed and polished the intake between the filter and the manifold, but that just makes/allows more flow. They sacrificed the true cold air that was previously coming from the fender well. Are K&N really marketing this as a CAI?

They market it as a metal air intake system. They do not mention cold. I think we get in a habit of saying it while technically speaking it is not. It does continue to draw from the fender, but also from the engine compartment. This one has a heat shielded cover whereas the one I had on my 4th Gen V8 did not. I can tell a difference in power. Cruise control doesn't try as hard now, and I can feel the extra torque when I accelerate. My gas mileage has also increased where I'm getting over 20-21 on the highway doing 80 whereas before I was around 18-19. I think it's continuing to improve as my ECU is learning with the increased air since I had to disconnect the negative battery cable.

Thanks for taking the time to clear that up. Let us know how things go over the next few months.

Hate to sound like an ass, but there's no way your "butt meter" feels the single digit HP and TQ gain.

The main reason you buy one of these is for (a) sound, (b) reusable filter element, (c) looks. If you buy it for the "supposed" power gain, you've been duped.

I would agree with single digit, but this is double digit. According to their website, HP and torque increase is ~13-14 on the FJ's engine. I would bet it is about the same on ours. I know I can feel the extra torque at full throttle.

I always take dyno charts with a grain of salt, especially one that the manufacturer posts.

If you look at the chart, peak HP gain of 13.55HP is at 5k rpm. Average gain throughout the range is about 5-7 HP, which is negligible.

Peak TQ gain of 14.55 ft/lb is also at 5k, with average gain of about 10 ft/lb.

I seriously doubt anyone can feel those average gains.

Furthermore, once heat soak sets in, I'm willing to bet that the unit will lose HP through most of the range. Almost every aftermarket intake that does not feed down into the bumper/fender or directly behind the grill will lose HP/TQ. It's simply a proven fact when independent dynos are done. For example, on my G35, every short ram intake loses power. Only the two current long tube intakes (AEM and Stillen Gen 3) make power, but not much of it.

The basic fact is that it's tough to beat the manufacturers stock, plastic intake (on most cars).

Will I buy one? Eventually, yes. I'll wait a while to see what comes down the turnpike, but I'll buy one for the reasons I listed above and not for any purported power increases, although they may/may not be there.
