K&N filtercharger for 3.0L V6...question

Hey fellow 4runner pilots...
So I finally found some time to devote some TLC to my beloved 1995 4runner Limited. A few years back I installed the K&N Filtercharger which as you know replaces the entire air box housing unit. The sound is very noticeable as you can really tell that air flow is not restricted. Anyhow, I am noticing a huge power loss, like when I step on the gas going up a moderately steep hill, the engine sounds like its putting in too much work, and top speed is about 35-40 miles an hour and it won't quite push any harder.

I am wondering if the gearing is off, and for those that also installed the kit, did you notice and correct this?

Any help is appreciated. I tried to take my truck to the mountains during the winter, and was a little flustered, cuz I couldn't roar up the mountain pass as freely as I had wished.

FYI, I had also installed a Borla T-304 catback a few years ago as well. I'd like to turn my neglected ride into a daily driver, but will sell her if she's acting like this to me

I'd start with plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, especially if its been sitting a while, not sure if I've ever heard the terms roar and 3.0 in the same sentence though.

that'd be a good place to start, and fluids (oil etc).

Check ignition timing, set it to 7 or 8 BTDC and see if it helps. My 89 had the same K&N set up, with a racing exhaust, and it would scoot, also check and see if your catylitic converter is clogged.
