It seems like I have seen something on yotatech.com abut these on a 4th gen. I had one on my last car, but took it off after about a month because of all the cabin noise. You will see some gains, but not as much as you would wish, espcially for that price. You will see more of a throttle response than actuall hp.
 
I just bought my K&N AIRCHARGER last week. It sounds like my hood is getting sucked in by the engine when I mash the throttle! I personally like the sound and cannot wait to mate it with the Borla exhuast...just can't justify the cost to momma after the Revtek lift I will be getting soon.I'll post pics of that as soon as I can. Anyway, so far I have noticed about 2-3 MPG gain although the computer went up from 19 to 25 at 60 mph. I'll just have to wait to see if that's BS or not! Hope this helps...IMO the cost is worth it. I was going to get an AEM intake but they do not offer one for the 4runner only the Tundra...too bad for them. Good luck and keep on wheelin'!

I have the Borla exhaust installed and I have ordered the K & N FIPK kit. Mine is a V8, can't wait to see the results. Hopefully an increase in fuel economy!!
 
whats the benefit of this over just a replacement air filter?

Sorry it took me so long to reply, been working long hours lately. To answer your question as best I can, a paper OEM drop in filter does not "smooth out the air" like the Air Charger or drop in filter from K&N and similar products do, at least according to the K&N website. They say because their product is made from cotton that air flows easier and is straightened out by the design of the pleats in both the cone and drop in filter. K&N also gave the analogy of blowing thru a paper bag and again thru your shirt--paper vs cotton. Obviously blowing thru your shirt is much easier! The Air Charger has a less restricted air flow because there is no air box "opening" to limit the amount of air available to the engine. I have read within this board, however, that there is a mod to cut open your airbox and increase airflow that way. Personnaly I like the way the Air Charger works and sounds, just do not expect any miraculous jump in fuel mileage--ie gain of 7 to 8. A gain of 2-5 MPG is more realistic. I paid 257.00 from ORW and it took about 4 days to arrive in the mail w/o rush delivery. Again, I am not an expert on this system by any means....now give me a question on an aircraft system and well...thats my specialty! :D

I guess they make these for the V6 if jgrimball is getting one. Anyone know the effects on your warrant by installing the air charger?

I agree with you to a point. If you are planning to have fun on the beach and splash in the ocean, go muddin', or any other potential water hazard, this might not be for you. If you are going to use your rig for hard-pack, rock, trail use, or even dunes like Glamis, then the filter should work fine. Here in New Mexico, I have been to Red Sands and a many different trails...yes, I admit all 4 wheels have been off the ground enough to warrant an alignment after just 7,000 mi :D ...in water you must understand the capabilities of your truck and all mods you install on it. And as FirstToyz mentioned, "at least plug the body hole under the filter area." Last thing you need is a seized engine or wet ignition components. The most important thing is to have fun. Just be aware that driving "off-the-road" will eventually break/bend/twist something on your rig! I guess that is the nature of the beast!

According to K&N there is no void on your warranty. I do know that the Air Charger is different than the FIPK and is not, I repeat NOT legal for on highway use in all 50 states! Check your local laws first!!! If anything, re-install the origional air filter box when you need to have your vehicle smog checked. Especially in California!!!:50cal:

Here are the photos. I love the new sound my rig has,
it has a nice performace engine sound.
I also cleaned up the engine and tried to polish out the
valve covers a little bit. I also took off the plastic engine cover,
I like it better without it on there.
