some of you know I live ina remote place. 27 miles to the nearest gas or minimart. 20 of those no cell service, just two lane roads in the snow.
Last night, leaving the store I put it in reverse, nothing, put it in drive, nothing
so I put it in 4wd and could move. thinking it was something in the electronics or something, looked underneath, nothing unusual so I thought, ok Ill just drive home in 4wd. It was not 4wd, it was front wheel drive. No noise, no vibrations even up to 50 mph. got within about 200 yards of my cabin and sounded like I was dragging a muffler about another 100 feet , kaboom. rear end is completely blown out, oil everyplace. this sucks.
I just hit 200k but have no idea how many miles are really on the swapped in locker. Now Im gonna have to get it towed to someplace, find a shop that can do the work, and hopefully fine an elocker to put in.
this aint gonna be cheap. I told my son about this, he said it was a god thing. He said God got me back to the park and my cabin, I have to take it from there. true, it could have happened anyplace on route, at night, with no cell service

Can't help with the rear axle. Which sucks.


What cell provider do you have? Have you considered a cell phone booster? They are not magic. They do extend cell service.
 
So you swapped in a whole e-locker rear end? That's too bad. I did the same thing with an axle I got from Oregon... so far no problems.

yes an entire elocker rear end but used my axles, brakes and drums as the breaks etc of the elocker were pretty rough
 
so they came and towed it away to the shop to fix. Since its winter, Ive got snow and no garage so have to have a shop do it, Ive used these guys before on other vehicles so I trust them. A little steep however on this one, including a complete used rear diff ( with elocker) installed $1100
towing 450 of which my insurance will only cover 150 ( living in the middle of bum frick no place does have disadvantages some times)

So when he went to load it on the flat bed it really did not want to move.

Crawling underneath I saw the big crack in the housing, will be interesting to see it up close. The guys I am using do a lot of Toyota and he said he has never seen or heard of one blowing apart like this one did, he said he is going to open it up to see what happened. 2 hours one way from me, I told him Id like to see too so he said he would stick it out back till I come get my 4runner. He is two weeks out but might be able to squeeze it in so got to drive a worn out corolla I borrowed from my son for 3 weeks as with my schedule I wont be able to get it any sooner unless he gets it done sooner
 
Tough break. wondering what happened too. The truck got you back without getting stranded is a blessing nevertheless. Getting it done professionally from a trusted shop is a good decesion considering the circumstances.
 
Its amazing how these trucks get you home and then kaboom!
My experience: Right after coming home from work, I got the key locked in the ignition (cannot turn left to remove the key out of the ignition).
 
One year out in Utah, with (coincidentally) a swapped in e-locker rear axle, I happened to catch the passenger rear wheel doing some funny movements in the rearview mirror. Just a sort of wiggle/wobble. It shouldn't be doing that.

I thought it was a bent axle that we'd just missed (there's usually a reason why those axles are for sale - the donor vehicle got wrecked hard, and stuff gets bent). But it kept on rolling. And we made it all the way back home to Missouri without it getting *too* bad.

When the axle shaft was pulled off you could wiggle the bearing/brake backing plate around enough that some of the ball bearings fell out. Heh... probably not the best idea in the world to have kept on driving it like that. But it made it.

I work with a good shop and one of the largest wreckers in the North west , B&R, they say they cant find a 4.10 elocker diff complete anyplace.. If I cant find one might have to put a straight one back in which I really don't want to do. :(

They can't even find one off a Tacoma, a locker that is?
 
thanks, they just called a few minutes ago 4:30 pst and they found one, just the 3rd member, but that's ok I guess.

Will see how it all goes, I told him I would like to see pictures if he has to get rid of it before I get there, blown but the supplier wants the core..I guess for an anchor


I guess these elockers are getting hard to find.

gonna cost 650. 2 years ago that's what I paid drum to drum
