Hey everyone! I bought my first 4Runner less than a year ago. I have a quick question for all you experts here. I think I need a new transmission..but I'm not entirely sure.
2001 - AT - 4x4
Last week, it was tough shifting between gears. (Gummy - if you will)
Monday of this week, on my way home from work, I hear a grinding sound. Sounds like metal on metal. I realized my tranny flush I planned for the weekend just got bumped up to when I got home. Well...I didn't make it home. The grinding only happened while cruising, in passing gear it was fine and what would be the first few gears in a manual felt fine. I'm doing about 65-70 and the Runner said "Kachunk Kachunk Kachunk", jerked forward and back and...no more tranny. Whole lot of Neutral... While waiting for the wrecker, I realize there is a noise. It sounds like metal on metal and happens regardless of my shifter's positioning. Happens in 4wheel drive and 2. My ride has no movement. None.
Prior to the breakage, the only indicator of the impending failure was the sticky shifter.
Ideas?
