KCs on the grill

Hey guys,

I was wondering, has anybody installed KCs/PIAAs on your 5th Gens on the outside of their rigs ?

Like these :

Seen a couple of builds on bull bars and such, but I'm looking for a clean look.

I've always liked the look on rally cars and other vehicles, but haven't yet seen any on our beloved 4Runners 5th Gens.

Any clues ? thanks

Like this ? Fairly easy, only trouble I had was connect the last red wire to the starter. To not accidentally touch the light button and leave them open all night, but you can fuse tap it if you don't want to open the dash and all.

I welded up 1/4" thick steel bracket that mounted to existing holes on the radiator support and poked through the grille on my Xterra... because mounting lights to the front of that was a similar challenge. I see no reason why you couldn't do that with the 4R. It's been on my list for a few years!

Best picture I still have, but you get the idea.

MeefZah : that's a good looking Xterra, I like the idea of the radiator support holes, I will look into that.
calcrc : you installed yours on the bumper right ?

I like the KC lights, because it does carry some of that old school flavor.

Don't see many 5th gens with them tho... most people lean towards the light bar.

I bet you dollar for dollar you probably get a better beam pattern with those rounds lights considering most low dollar light bars just give you a glaring wall of light.

If im not mistake Rago Rabrication is dropping some goodies the 24th. Pretty sure i saw mounts for these in the grill on that line up. Let me see if i can find it again.:hunter:

Definitely post a link if you can find it! I love the old school rally look too, I'd love to see something like that made easy for our trucks.

Yeah link it. I'd rather buy something like that than build it again. I'm no fabricator and it was a lot of trial and error, measuring and remeasuring, and disassembling of the front end several times to get my brackets right on the X.

Yes the 2 on top had holes already made for leds or PIAA and the bottom ones I pre-drilled before I got it installed. 2 1-inch holes and 2 3/4-inch holes for the wires. I got installation pics but never got a chance to upload them on the forum :)

Yeah the behind the bumper thing is done a lot. I don't care for it, personally. I'll keep on waiting or maybe unass myself and build one.

You could use the grille support frame and mount some brackets to the underside and have it come out of one of the grille openings. Think of a "J" bracket. Where the long part top of the "J" would be what pokes sticks out of the grille and the bottom of the "J" would be where you would mount to the grille support. Below is quick illustration of what I am talking about. This would be a side view. The small black line is the grille support. The red line is the bracket, the grey and yellow is the light. The thick black line would be the grille.

The only problem with that would be bouncing, or jiggling, maybe a cross brace would help, if there is room for it. Sorry, just thinking out loud.

Yea, I was going to mentioned that as well. Just drill a hole in the brackets and and use a piece of aluminum stock bolt it everything up nice and tight. Another cross brace could be used where you would mount the lights too. It would also be a good idea to use a thicker aluminum/steel stock for the brackets/cross brace to prevent them from moving as much.

So... these aren't exactly KCs, but they are similar. I mounted them to the bumper "skin". I put a large piece of metal and some huge washers on the threaded post to help distribute the weight across a larger area of the bumper skin. I was afraid they would vibrate and damage the plastic bumper skin, but they haven't despite my best off-roading efforts.
