KDSS in a 2021 OFF Road vs. Trail Edition vs. Venture

KDSS is offered on the Venture and TRD Off Road models. It is not offered on the *new* Trail model.
The Trail Edition from 2010-2016 was re-named the TRD Off Road in 2017 and matched the Tacoma naming convention.
Toyota then introduced a different model that is an SR5 with cosmetic changes in 2020 and called it a Trail model - which is just super ****in lazy. So the result is essentially this:
4Runner comes in 3 basic setups: (1) SR5, (2) TRD OR (rear locker, crawl and MTS), and (3) Limited (AWD, XREAS, 20" wheels). Each of those 3 can then come in a couple flavors of interior, suspension, and cosmetic packages.
SR5 - comes in base, premium, and trail.
TRD OR comes in base, premium, Venture, and TRD Pro. (base premium and Venture can add KDSS - Pro has Fox suspension and cannot add KDSS). The original TRD Pro concept models had KDSS but it was dropped from the model before it was produced.
Limited only comes in base or night shade cosmetics.
The past naming is where the confusion comes from. Toyota got very lazy with its naming here.
2010-2016 Trail = 2017-current Trd OR and has KDSS optional.
2020-current Trail = SR5 with cosmetic upgrades and does not have KDSS.
2020-current Venture = TRD OR plus cosmetics
And if you go back to the FJ Cruiser where some of these names started, Trail team edition transfered to become the 4Runner Trail model. And FJ Cruiser Trail Team Ultimate Edition or "TTUE" became what is now the TRD Pro 4Runner.

I have decided to go with a TRD Off-road Premium with the KDSS but I’m told it’s not available in Texas and will take 6 months to order/arrive.

"Gulf states" do not carry KDSS per Toyota. Why, maybe they are trying to sell more GX460's since they all have KDSS. Amarillo had one but they themselves special ordered to have on the lot even though nobody ordered it. They only budged $900 off of MSRP. Soooooo, I got $2900 off MSRP and went to Peoria AZ (Larry Miller) and drove it back. Used air miles to fly one way to Phoenix.
Larry Miller in Co Springs didn't have what I wanted. I didn't want those crappy nerf step bars (installed my own RCI sliders) but I did want the moonroof and sliding rear cargo deck and I found that in Peoria. I highly recommend getting the sliding rear cargo deck. Others may disagree with me on that though.

Book a flight out of your region. I wanted Kdss Premium with no sunroof. Had to wait for a 3 different boats to arrive before one became available. It's a new vehicle. It can still be serviced locally.
Only hiccup if you buy FCA products is buying out of State usually voids your State Lemon Law's.
I just picked up a TRD Off-road Premium with KDSS, and I had to get it shipped up from NC, because there where only a couple in the entire North East.

So you know your sales/inventory regions.

So you can see what's in which region. You can change the regions in the upper right corner("change your location")
Then the dealer ships the 4runner to you. Shipping was a little more than going to pick it up, but I didn't have to fly for 3 hours, then drive for 10 more.
I had a local dealership in Austin, TX who was willing to track down an ORP W/KDSS out of state. Oddly enough, they got it from Larry Miller in Peoria, AZ as well. Ha! Anyways, the whole process took about a month but it was better than waiting countless months for one to arrive from overseas.
If you don’t want to make a trip out of going to pick one up out of state, search around... I bet you’ll find a dealership willing to help you out.

Can you have a white Venture, with KDSS and a moon roof?
I can see those options in the compare tables. I can see the KDSS AND moonroof as options in the build, but I can’t sell the both. I also don’t see Ventures with KDSS as options in any searches.

InterestIMG. I’m in CO and don’t get those options, no kdss. I picked an OH zip code and got 7 option packages, one with kdss, moon roof, rails available in white. But another option has kdss, roof, and cargo slider - but only in black...
Do you just have to strategically pick zip codes to find the options I want? This will be a cash transaction/no-trade-in. So,I could travel to get it.
Or will my local dealer be able to swap or order one?

Went to a dealer today to at least have the family ride in, I’ve rented them from time to time so fairly familiar with them. The sales person was useless. Told me that I didn’t want to TRD pro, really didn’t seem to want to sell me a 4Runner. It was the weirdest experience I’ve ever had. Eventually when we were getting ready to leave He `warmed up a bit, but the oddest experience of ever had Trying to buy a car.

its a regional thing------when I bought my 15 trail premium........you could not find a trail in new england that did not come with KDDS. they also all came with wheel locks......those were tossed in the harbor immediately...who is going to steal wheels off a toyota? ever try to find the "lug key" or get it off in the middle of the winter?

I'm trying to price a blue Venture with Moonroof, sliding deck, and KDSS. It says that you can't get those options in "blue". Limited to certain colors. Why would that be? Looks like I will have to sit down with a dealer to sort out exactly what I can get and then find it or order it. Also kinda strange that all the Ventures I'm seeing advertised have the black TRD wheel instead of the Gray ones that are standard for the model.

I’ve have a white 2021 venture with moonroof, KDSS, and black pro wheels. Bought in SoCal but searched nationwide when I was on the hunt. Found dealers in Texas said the option I was looking for were nonexistent.
