KDSS Long term reliability?

FJ40 is it's own animal and has a cult like following totally agree on parts availability for that. I get your other points but you're also kind of making my point when you mentioned the profit, how expensive is it going to be to repair this system if it can be. Remember manufactures are only required to make replacement parts for 10 years that's the only guarantee we have ! I called around it is near impossible to find anybody that will work on our KDSS and it's in current production. Say it's discontinued plus five years after that no way , we can find anybody that will fix that system correctly notice I said correctly. that's my opinion of course we all have them. I've been a member here for 10 years and will be 10 years from now so will be a will see how it all works out. This is the remainder of the information I'm going to post about the subject. I encourage all those to use your own minds and
da da don't believe the hype , don't believe the hype boy
Well, so far in 110K miles, my KDSS has only needed new bushings. If my KDSS ever needs servicing, I'll buy the SST for $500, unless a lower cost work around has been found.

Do you work for a dealer or Toyota proper? What is your title? Just curious.

Just so we're clear the general public cannot purchase Toyota special service tools. You may find them used on eBay and maybe get them from a connection that works at Toyota. But don't give people out there reading the impression that they can just run down to Toyota grab all those special service tools and parts and go home and do it because doesn't work that way. I wish you another 110K of trouble-free miles. But the reality is like most, you will have probably sold that truck moved on and it'll be the next person's problem. When the very heavy and mechanical KDSS systems finally go out of production the SST will follow shortly thereafter.

On a related note...how do I get my dog to not jump up on the counters when I'm not home? He never ever does it when I'm there. :eyebrows:

Mousetraps on edge of counter, paws on edge of counter, snapping mousetraps, no more paws on counter!

Or you could do what most people do and use a crate, or shut them in another room with no access. But the mousetrap thing is a lot more fun to watch on your wifi security camera and has a lasting memory for you and the dog!

As for the rest of it........

In other words, why do you think Toyota went the route that they did when a much simpler solution is right there in front of their face?

Or is it more logical that Toyota went the route that they went because of reasons that are NOT seen by you as an outsider looking in? Maybe we should give the Toyota engineers the benefit of the doubt in this?

Let's focus here. By "went that route" do you mean use accumulators or choose to make the mounting point motive as compared to a two piece sway bar?

I don't think I'm aware of any SST that I can't buy somewhere. There's quite a few places you can buy this particular tool. OTOH the price often does get to the point where some I've built myself - like the SST for rear wheel bearing press. Lots of us have built our own wheel bearing SST. And if the cost reaches the point where people are removing KDSS systems - then we'll have plenty of aftermarket parts.

Again, maybe you need to look in the mirror before criticizing others...you are the one that need to focus...you misquoted people and talk about stuff that no one asked. Stop with this crap.

My questions are very simple...do you think that you know more about 4runner KDSS than Toyo engineers? Do you think that Toyo engineers made KDSS the way it is because they know less than you?

You seem to hold yourself with high regards...maybe even higher than Toyota engineers. Or is it more likely that you do not have the big picture and that your limited knowledge is limiting your view on the matter? I vote for the latter.

As far as my knowledge compared to who? The team of toyota engineers? One specific engineer who works on KDSS? A project manager who makes the cost/benefit decision to offer the system on 4runners? I don't know more about the 4runner KDSS than Toyota's engineers. However That doesn't mean that toyota doesn't screw things up. They make and correct errors all the time. You certainly are aware of recalls and Toyota technical service bulletins right? How would you explain those otherwise? Do we need to start a list of all of the things toyota engineers botch? It's a pretty long list.

But wait...you said that YOUR system is cheaper, right? and that Toyota KDSS is overly complicated and expensive? So, given "cost/benefit" ratio, the project manager should have used your design, right? But, they did not.

The highlight here is that...you admitted: "I don't know more about the 4runner KDSS than Toyota's engineers."

That is end of discussion. Now, we can go back to discussing other aspects of this thread...instead of you forcing us to discuss your "profound" knowledge in all things UN-related to this discussion and your career choice and how superior your intellect is (**cough***BS***cough***).

Surely you kept stock tires on your 4runner right? Do you know more than Toyota about tires? I mean, Toyota clearly selected the best possible tire. Is this really the logic you're going with?

Wow...yet another tangent....:behindsofa:

And yet again, you missed the point of my post...re-directing it after being stumped yet again. Geez.

Have a good day guys...Jetboy, please stop with your nonsense.

Thanks for the insight on unicorns, log splitters, and dog training.
I thought resurrecting an old thread instead of making a new one of the same topic would be useful.
It has been amusing at the least.

So at the end of the day, my question was how many have personally had (not something that may happen to your cousin's uncle) trouble with KDSS on thier trail 4runner.

The answer is zero on 4runners, one on Lexus.

:flamewar:

What was the point of your post?

I had KDSS on my 2006 (purchased in 2005) Lexus GX470 and had zero issues with it.

I blew shocks on the GX but no KDSS issues. When I sold it (after 8 years of driving) for the '14 GX it had 110K miles or so.

Only issue I had was two blown shocks. Rest was rock solid.

It seems like you and RCFJ feel really good about this "analogy." I bet that you guys are padding each other on the backs and congratulating each other for being so intelligent! :D A better smilie would be: :der:

It is pure utter crap analogy. What is the best possible tire in your opinion? I bet that it is different from mine...and 99% other members here. Toyota selects factory tires because they are reasonably price for bulk but also because they know that everyone has different tastes/needs in tires...and live in different climates/environments. Toyota select one that works for most consumers...just like Acura selecting certain tires for the MDX because they are quiet and low rolling resistance, not because they are good in snow or that they are good for track use. People change tires like they change shirts.

Tell me when you can go to your local Discount Tire to pick up KDSS alternative. So, Toyota went to this "overly" complicated KDSS system (vs. something that you thought up while sitting on the toilet) because it was cheap OR that they did not know what they were doing OR that they did not look after their customers? All the while, you admitting that you know nothing about KDSS development. Nicely done. Nicely done.

Now, you know why i wrote above that you miss the boat...hell, you not only miss the freaking boat dock, but you miss the highway exit!!!

Now that i made you and RCFJ feel like silly, it does point to the bigger issue here. You claim to be some sort of professional engineer or hydraulic person...arguing endlessly and flaunting your credentials. But no one in their right mind would come up with that silly analogy above...and think that it is pure gold! :loco: No one. If this is your day job, then Walmart is hiring greeters if you're interested....

Your whole argument just went down the toilet with that silly analogy you were/are so proud of.
