Keep smashing tailpipe

Alright, my last 4Runner, first wheeling trip smashed my tailpipe on a rock, and again, smashed it on my new truck about a month ago. My last 4Runner i just cut off and did a turn-down but it was stupid loud.

I was thinking about just cutting about 2 ft off, as it goes up and over the rear cross member. What have you guys done? Or am I the only one to have problems with this?

Right now it rattles against the frame really bad and its annoying as hell. I've bent it down some, but its still hitting when Im on the brake.

I have the EXACT same problem and the rattle drives me nuts. You obviously will lose the rear hanger if you cut it back by the crossmember and it may need some more work to keep it bent down from your frame. I was thinking of doing this: scroll down..

But some people say you will get more exhaust in the cabin because it will no longer stick out of the side... I wonder if there is any truth to that?

Yes, the back seats heat up alot, but i wouldnt say you get a strong smell of exhaust, but i wouldnt be surprised if it came in. i had this problem cause my tailpipe broke at the flange.

haha this post is story of my life.. I smashed mine a while back. Cut it like right where the hanger held it. Then smashed it again and knocked the hanger loose. So yet again, I cut it and pretty much bent it as far from the frame as I could (which wasn't a whole lot lol) and now it's back on the frame. It rattles when I start my truck sometimes or when I'm stopped at a light or something. Very annoying.

I most certainly would not recommend cutting off the tailpipe anywhere short of out from the edge of the vehicle. Now that I have said that.

I have cut mine right at the last bend. It still has a slight turn out. I also moved and re-welded the last hanger.

I know of a few guys that cut further forward. Right after the loop over the axle and before it turns to the back.

I will tell you that I have never smelled exhaust since I did my cut. Also I don't drag it any more.

Yeah I never smelled exhaust when I just had a turn down from the muffler.

Gerdo: I assume the place where you cut yours is where I want to cut mine. I also am certain this wouldn't increase the noise of the exhaust much...

Sounds like you've definitely got to re-weld the hanger if you want to cut it right after it goes up and over the rear crossmember.

Yeah this guy did the same thing I was thinking and no extra mount. Interested if its moving around a lot... I'd rather just weld something to keep it in place...

Brian, and I have cut our exhaust in the same place. Its in the bend about 12" from the end of the exhaust. Right where it bends and goes parallel with the frame. No issues so far. just sawzall it off, I never welded on any other mounts, it doesnt move. Just cut it off where it wont bang the frame

Exhaust pipe

Had to wack mine up when installing the CBI bumper ended up having a muffler shop cut it back and bring it back down dumping at a 45 degree to the bumper. Try and take a picture tomorrow.

sorry this took so long. When I had mine repaired I had them tuck everything up out of harms way.

Ha. I was going to sawzall it off today, but of course just got stuck in traffic for 2.5 hrs due to a freeway shooting so it will have to wait til tomorrow. :police:

Sweet, thanks J-Money.

Here's a pic of mine (jmoney's looks the same). It doesn't rattle and I've never smelled any more exhaust. It isn't any louder either...
