Kenwood DNX-8120 - Installed!

After waiting for weeks, I finally got the DNX-8120 Headunit installed in my 08 Urban Runner.

It's a very slick system, and seemed to impress my local installers.

They also installed the iPod cable, XM Nav/Traffic, backup camera, and Hertz HSK-163 front components (three-way!) and Hertz HSK-165 coaxials.

Next week, they start on the custom sub box, a slimmer JL-stealthbox, basically, with a JL 10w3.

All the speakers will be powered by an Audison 5.1 channel amp.

I'll take some pictures when it's all finished, but if anyone has any questions about the DNX-8120 now, feel free to ask!

Awesome, cannot wait to see the finish product man! I've been dying to get the DNX8120 ever since I've heard about it. Hopefully soon, buying a new house tends to change one's priorities...

Congrats on the new house - definitely the right priority! All the same, when you did get the 8120, I think you'll be quite happy.

I didn't install it, but I'm fairly sure it's not bypassed. I can't see a need to watch DVDs while I'm driving, and all the other functions, navigation included, work while you're driving. As for my passengers, my company should be enough. :p
 
LOL, that's a good one! Well prior to the 4Runner, I had 2 prior vehicles where I had my Pioneer AVH-P7500DVD in and bypassed it mainly not so I couldn't watch it, but so the missus could on our long road trips, and that alone paid for itself many times over.

That's actually an excellent reason to bypass it. I just haven't felt the need. I keep meaning to figure out if you can watch iPod videos without a bypass - it's possible Kenwood forgot to add that "feature." If so, that'd be the way I'd do it, were I so inclined to watch video on my deck.

when you ground the p-brake wire it enables use of all video (dvd, usb, ipod) while driving.

I agree with the dude earlier about his wife needing something to do on long trips...my wifes the same way, thank God for the bypass!
 
At least I'm not alone. I understand the safety of it all, and that's great, but shotgun's gotta have something to do!

Well, I discovered you CAN play iPod videos while driving without grounding a thing or putting on the parking brake. For whatever reason, Kenwood doesn't see THAT as dangerous as driving while watching a DVD. Go figure.

The quality, by the way, is pretty good for mobile video.
 
i see ur at the bay area, did u haooen to go to my uncle shop, its in the bay area and im from the bay, my uncles shop is audiomobile of oakland, located at 307 harrison st, oakland its in china town, also the place where i get my gear at.
 
Personally i feel having the bypass makes me use my Nav alot more than i normally would if i had to pull over and put the parking brake on. I usually have a passenger so they are the ones typing the info in while the vehicle is moving. Plus if i get stuck at a long light and am looking for something to eat its that easy. And its also very usefull when i need the number for a restaurant or or a store to see if there open or to make a reso. I just would go crazy if i had to put the dam brake on all the time. I believe me im never unsafe while using it. I know i'll have those which agree and disagree. And all you have to do is run the teal (e-brake wire) and run it to the black ground wire. Anyways my .02. Would love to see pics of the whole thing when you get a chance i have the DNX7100 amd a JL 8W3 built into the where the stock 8" was sounds amazing.

Thankfully, the Kenwood doesn't force you to bypass anything to use the nav functions. Those are always available unless you put on "safe mode" which off by default. My previous Pioneer nav unit required a parking brake to use the nav - very annoying, agreed!

2 questions:
1) Do you know if the installer ran the wires up through the headliner, or down under the carpet ?
2) Is that double-sided tape holding the camera to the truck ?

Reason I ask, is I'll probably do the same setup.

I do still have it, but it's still installed in my Camry, which I still do drive occasionally. It's an old Avic-n1, by the by

Through the headliner, I believe, but I'd have to ask to make sure.

2) Double side tape I believe, but again, I'd have to double check.
