Question for the Kenwood dnx guys out there (or others with any thoughts),
Back story and setup:
I recently purchased a 2008 4Runner with a dnx5140 installed. The previous owner did not install the PACK SWI and KCA-ip301v cable so I tore into things and did that with no trouble thanks to the numerous write-ups on dash and stereo removal here.
Updated firmware on HU to ver 3.1 per Kenwood website
Parking brake override to allow videos and GPS functions while on the move
DVD works fine, I can play a full DVD with no stoppage.
Tuner works fine
Ipod Classic 80G (it is on the ‘approved’ list for this HU according to the Kenwood site)
My troubles started with the video play back thru the ipod. Music would play fine but the video would reset after 15-20 minutes. At which time the HU display would show the ipod was Disconnected then Connected. I could start the video again and the same thing would happen sometime later.
Once suggestion from the Kenwood forums was to reset the ipod. I did that but no change in results. This weekend I tried the start fresh approach (mainly due to an iTunes corruption of my library during an upgrade, lost everything!!) Yup, that was super fun. At least everything was backed up on my ipod. (Note to others, back up your itunes library just in case.)
I reloaded everything from my ipod to the computer, spent a few days redoing playlists, podcasts and setting up the movies before resetting my ipod back to factory, thus wiping everything on it. I resynced and started fresh. Plugged it in this morning and it is even worse than before. Now it jumps between Connected and Disconnected every 3-10 seconds. Unplugged and plugged it back in a few times only to get the same results. Once I got sick of the 3-10 seconds of a song between disconnects I switched to Tuner. About 10 seconds into listening to the radio the HU switched to ipod on its own and the Disconnect/connected thing started again. I switched back to tuner and it did it again. Eventually I had to unplug to the ipod to regain control of the radio.
I am waiting on some other dash parts, Ashtray Kit for 2nd outlet, extra power outlet for the second row and some switches so I will be pulling things apart to check for loose connections shortly. Everything other than the ipod works so I am stumped at this point. I also plan on trying out my wife's Nano to see if that will work to ensure it is a HU issue rather than my ipod. I listen to my ipod all day at work without issue and the kids watched a video from the ipod to the tv this weekend so I do not have a lot of faith in it being the problem.
Any thoughts are more than welcome, ground wire, parking brake wire grounded, power fluctuation....I am open to any thoughts.
I like the thought of this HU but between this problem and the horrible user interface (really, that guy should be shot) have me thinking about changing it.
I should also note that I tried the ipod on the seat, in the glove box and in my hand while parked and got the same issue so I do not think it is a bumping/jarring issue since I was sitting still.
