hi, have had a new limited 2014 4 runner for two months and some seedy guy stole my jacket out of the local rec centre. called the stealership and they want 450 for the fob and an hour or two to reprogram and cut the key!!

this is my first import and gota tell you I love it,,any ideas on where online I can purchase a new fob/smart key? or am I stuck with the dealer..

also they stole my remote start fob, that ones gonna be 200 bucks, was a compustar two way pro….

also strange that when you open the door the car stops running and you have to start it again…Kinda just whish it had a regular key...

any help would be appreciated..

For a '14, I'm guessing you're stuck with the dealer. PLUS, do you really trust the aftermarket to do this right? ... I wouldn't.

I do hope other readers of this will takeaway something I've known for eons: Never, ever, leave your keys in your coat pocket. Me? - I learned the hard way.

Unfortunate lesson, OP. I'd sure suggest you waste no time in fixing this. It's possible your HO insurance will cover this.

is the compustar remote start piggybacking the factory security system? if so then thats a toyota lawyer requirement to kill the engine when you open a door.

if you got the security/remote start to bypass the OEM system, then opening the door shouldnt kill the engine, unless the installer screwed up.

on the warden's tacoma, we have the 2way 9000 series remote start system and the engine only dies if i forgot to put the key and turn it to run and press the brake pedal.

until you press the brake pedal the engine will keep running until the timer runs out.

this only applies to the compustar systems.

well with the .5 or 1% standard deductible, HO wont cover it probably.

i know i have a .5% deductible so i am looking at just about $1050 before the HO wil kick in.

Sorry to hijack the thread...

On frosty mornings, I like to start my LE and go back inside for breakfast. I can't lock the doors with the remote. Dealer says can't reprogram - must order remote starter. Is there a way to leave the driver's window down, lock the doors manually, then somehow roll up the windows with the remote? Thanks in advance.

probably wont work since the engine is running and the system is not armed.

3rd party systems dont have this limitation.

thats why i always advocate for 3rd party systems, lots more flexibility than OEM's.

As philsey said, I wouldn't waste any time. Depending on if it was intentional or just a mix up, your jacket and keys might be the least expensive item that disappears. I really don't want to worry you, but sometimes I'm a "glass half empty" kind of guy.

I'm not sure about the technical side of this, but I would think that you should definitely look at having that lost key "locked out"/removed from the ECU. If you left the laser cut key in the slot, they can still gain access into the vehicle, but it might deter them from starting and driving it away. Again, I'm not certain if this is 100% possible, maybe someone who has played around in Techstream can chime in or get the dealer's opinion.

When you say you can't manually lock it I'm guessing you mean by using the lock switch on the door. Can you not manually lock it with the key though?

the vehicle is smart enough to know your trying to lock the door while the engine is running from outside. it wont let you.

same issue if you try to lock the vehicle with the key in the ignition on non smart key systems.

to get around the lockout feature, he is trying to fool the system to think he is in the vehicle and locking the doors from the seat with the window down.

Why not just get remote start? It appears that it'll make your life much easier over the life of ownership.

Yes, I take your point. The thing is, the smart key system is really nice and I hesitate to spend the $s on something I won't otherwise use. Try to put the car in drive (foot on brake) while it's running without the FOB in your pocket and the engine cuts off - nice safety feature. In a carjacking, if you toss the FOB, the car with your kids in it isn't going anywhere.

Dealer rep said your can't lock the doors with the engine running to prevent locking yourself out - which makes no sense since you're trying to use the remote to lock it.

The issue arose when I had the car loaded at a hotel and wanted to warm it up while returning to the room.

thanks for the input folks, looks like to the stealer i go……what a shame, I dont get the hype with these smart key fobs,,,would of prefered a good old fashioned key...

Just for clarification, on your LE, when your smart key is not in the vehicle, and you hit the brake to try to shift to drive, the engine shuts off? My old car never did this, it would just blink a message at me telling me the smart key is out of range and you can still drive it forever. I think I've also read here a few years ago that an LE was stolen while it was running and the smart key was on the owner (outside of the vehicle).

Pretty interesting if Toyota actually updated this. You guys with the 2014 LE models, can you try it and post results? :)

on the smart key system, if you toss the smart key out the window, the vehicle will stay running regardless if you hit the brakes or do anything else. its only when you turn off the vehicle is when you have issues.

the only other downside I have seen (its in another post from a member here) is when this member started the 4runner for the wife and forgot to pass along the smart key. the wife took the kids to somewhere and turned off the 4runner, locked it and went into the mall or something. came back out and whoops, no key to unlock the 4runner.

needless to say, she wasn't very happy.

warming up the 4runner is the only issue I have with the smart key system compared to having 2 keys and a actual ignition switch.

with the smart key system, you will need to get a 3rd party remote start system to get around this issue with the smart key. I highly advise NOT getting the OEM remote start, unless they come out the RES+ the lexus have now. its the cellphone based system you see like drone mobile or viper smart start system but its an OEM.

Took a while to carjack a 2014 LE, but I finally found one and took it. Threw the keys out the window and kept rolling down the road. Couldn't restart it though. :(

But seriously, our 2014 LE acts just like any other 5th Gen with the smart key.

For the record, I was able to start the engine, close the door, and use the pop-out key from the fob to manually lock the door on my 2013 LE. And the engine continued to run.

This was me, and yes she dropped me at work to then take the kiddos to daycare (never turned it off) and I had the key in my pocket and she certainly wasn't happy when she couldn't restart it.

So on the 2011 LE you can drive off if it's running, I do have remote start and while I was annoyed that it shut off when you open the door at first, now I'm happy it does that for security. It's against the law to leave your car running in Co unless you have a remote start with is kind of security feature actually.

well that's new, they must have changed it from last years. if I remember correctly you couldn't do that before.

but then again I have been wrong before.

the emergency key isn't very robust, so I wouldn't be using it. at the prices they charge for replacements nowadays, I rather freeze and use the crap out of my seat warmers. crank them on level 3 and they warm up pretty dam fast.

edit : reading comprehension fail. I thought you had a 2014 not a 2013.

still goes back to getting a proper remote start being better in the long run. im saving up for a drone mobile system. already been given a $500 installed price.

That's what I thought guys...which leads me to my next question. What was splash101 talking about when he said it turns itself off if the key is not detected? Unless of course, I was just having a very long day and reading his post wrong, lol.
