Key Off, Stuck in Acc

I've got this issue on a new runner I picked up. When you turn the key off, or even take it out the car acts like it's still in the accessory mode. The oil light, 4wd (if engaged) and seat belt lights stay on. You can also turn on the HVAC blower, roll down/up windows and the sunroof. This is all while the key is out of the ignition completely.

Any thoughts as to what's causing this? It's on a 1997 4runner SR5. 3.4 with the 5spd.

Sounds like your ignition switch is out of whack. When you rotate the key assembly it's supposed to spin to different contacts which do different things, such as power the starter, provide power to the interior, etc.

I would guess the one you've got is worn out. Maybe others will chime in as well but my first thought is that you need a new ignition switch.

Dang. Is there a test procedure to see if it is failing?

Well it seems as though the problem went away. It only happened when it got cold out and we received a foot of snow. Not ideal time to try and jump the battery. I'm going to see if the problem pops its head back up when the temp drops again.

On a side note I found a nice oil leak underneath the thermostat housing when I was reconnecting the battery. So that's going to be fun to deal with.

It might just be temper-mental, old parts can do that. Maybe it's wearing down so that if you don't consciously turn the key all the way off it's possible to slip it out with those still on.

I was having a similar issue with my shift column. I would put it in park but the button wouldn't engage so I couldn't pull the key out of the ignition unless I bumped the shifter up again. Ended up replacing some grommets and cleaning it up a bit and works fine now.
